i want to save up for a kit for my 951, but don't most of the kits out there basically just take advantage of just the turbo, and therefore put most of the power after 3000rpm. before i do something like this i would like to get some low end power first. what are some common mods to do this besides exhaust? because i love the boost, but i hate the car (probably everyone else does too) before the turbo kicks in.

I have been told by the previous owner that after research into reducing lag, he put in the Boost enhancer and a Stage 1 intercooler from Lindsey.
He claims it reduced lag significantly..at least on a Turbo S..I cant personally comment since I bought the car after these upgrades.

Considering these are 1980s 4-cylinder 2.5 liter engines... It's amazing Porsche created the technology to get the great power you do get, where you do have it. Careful tuning and upgrades can bring the powerband down a good bit, but be prepared to spend some bucks (stroker kits, or 3 liter block, and better turbo, etc etc etc).
If you really want low end torque in a 944 series car, get an S2 - but then you won't have the ultimate top-end power and upgradability of the 951. It's a trade-off. Or get a Corvette, have all kinds of low and top end power, but without the great character of the 944. Unfortunately there's no free lunch.

and neons : )
i wasn't really trying to reduce the lag, i just wanted to get some more ummff before the turbo kicks in. i'm not talking major gains here, just maybe a little bit more that i can feel.

Although I don't have it right "off the line", my car at even throttle and then going to full throttle from about 2700rpm it makes boost before 2900 and is at full song by 3200.
That's not really the worst thing though not having it right at the bottom. Lots of the small displacement high revving cars are the same way though....you really have to rev them to get them to do a lot.
