Default Possible 914 purchase

Happened to find a 73 914 1.7L with 103k on the clock and four previous owners. Tangerine, non-appearance group car that looks to be stock (non-carb) with original paint. I didn't find any rust, but it has had the jack plates cut out and new ones welded in. It's got new carpet, but needs the seats redone. Probably also needs new weather seals all around, new tires, brakes gone over, etc. Bottom of motor seemed a bit wet. Compression test 4 years ago was excellent and I'll have it repeated to confirm. Pending ppi, negotiated for a sale price of 11.5k. I'm hoping the inspection goes well and I'll be in the 914 crowd shortly!

Good luck- if jack points have been replaced look REALLY carefully at hell hole and longitudionals because they are probably suspect. Take off the rockers and inspect carefully if you're really interested in the car. 11.5 is not a steal so make sure it is a good basis for a new project.

Your GT4 needs another mid-engine car as a stable-mate...

Remove the roof then look at the gaps where the tops of the doors meet the rear quarters. If they're narrower than the gap where the side of the door meets the quarter, then the chassis is sagging and you may want to move on.

I gave it a pretty good look and didn't find any other rust. The doors also lined up perfectly. Hell hole, battery tray, floor boards all looked good as well. The fact that the jack plates needed to be replaced but nothing else was rusty seemed odd to me, but I read the receipts from when the work was done a few years ago and it looks like the shop went over the entire car. I'll have my mechanic confirm during the ppi.

Considering all of that, I still think $11.5 is a bit high. If it checks out I would try $10K all cash and see what happens. But, if you really like that car, and the new PPI is solid, I would not let $1,500 keep me from a car I wanted. But that 1,500 could go towards getting the car dialed in for driving....

I agree that 11.5 is a bit high. The Hagerty value is prob right around 10k. I was willing to pay a bit more as the car is so original. Nothing has been changed on the car, except the radio (and the original will come with the car). Again, all of this will need to be confirmed on the ppi.

cannot beat an original paint 914. 11,500 may be a bit high today, but not tomorrow, these cars are creeping up by day. We are selling decent 914s now for 20 thousand plus.

Pix? Also, post on 914World. The guys there LOVE to pick apart potential purchases, and will give you some great insight. Clean 914s are very tough to find.

Lots of pics here:

Anyone have a suggestion for a ppi near philly? I called a shop that I've used before and was discussing a ppi with them. Their response was, "Wow! We haven't seen a 914 here in a looooooong time." Not confidence inspiring.

The rust by the fender welt could be all the way through. Not an uncommon place especially with old rotted trunk seal. Look carefully around windshield trim as well.
Any 914 is going to have rust somewhere- where did the car live most of its life? Hopefully no winter driving! High humidity areas or near ocean is deadly...
Good luck!

Just looked at the pictures and do not think that you can go wrong with this one. I would pay 11500 for it

I agree (based solely on the pix, not a substitute for inspecting it in person).

I would actually take a chance on this car as it has the original paint. Only thing that I really do not like is that someone has replaced the carpets and those aftermarket wheels and that borsch system, (that looks like it was replaced with stock in other pictures) That can all be corrected. These 914s have all been so much through the mill, that finding a body this good is very difficult,. We are selling most good 914s now for around 20 thousand. Needless to say we go through them, but they are not concours cars, just good straight rust free driver quality, and ALL have had repaints!!!!
