A 914 Story
#16
Thanks for reminding me that I have to get on the stick
& finish posting the entire story of my acquisition of this
914!
I have not yet found a 'Litchgrün/Birch' in Scottsdale to
photograph side-by-side. But they have to be pretty close!
Here is a 'Litchgrün/Birch' gt4 that I recently saw at the
PCA Parade in Spokane earlier this month!
And JUPJAI's Canadian 'Litchgrün/Birch' 911 Turbo S cabriolet
was also in attendance in Spokane!
Hopefully I'll get a side-by-side done with a 'Litchgrün/Birch' at
some point in the near future so we can judge how close they
truly are...or not!

Eduardo

Being colourblind doesn't help, but I should show those to my son- if he's lucky and gets a PTS allocation for his upcoming GT3 he's talking about birch green...

I should click in here more often. I don't anymore and missed the start if this story. Glad to read it now.
I'm a big fan of rare colors though I'm hardly a collector of them. I especially like the mid-70s palette. I have a limonengelb, aka sunflower yellow 86 Carrera. I had a Zambezi 74 914. Currently I have a bumble bee (with sunflower accents) and a really ratty signal orange 73 2.0. And I sold my 912 to buy a Gulf Blue 74 911 normal.
They've got one of those car condos here in Larimer County. I've considered one but if I did that I'd want the business there. And that's a car condo no-no. So it's all stuffed on the farm. You know how to find me if you want to come down out of the mountains for a visit. Though I warn you it's chaos. My newest girl turns 8 weeks in The morning.

Wow! What a cool read! Just stumbled upon it as I am securing a '74 2.0 Project Complete Car this week. This will be my 1st 914 and really looking forward to driving one finally. Interested at a Gold one years ago, but passed and see that you have my Fave Green of all with Chartreuse in 2nd. Give us an update on yours please as this thread is ancient!! Thanks!

I'll see Eduardo tomorrow AM at our bi-weekly car guy coffee group get together so I'll tell him to update the thread. He just got back from Rennsport, lucky dog.

Great thread Eduardo...sorry to not see you at Rennsport had my 2 adult sons in tow...great times! We have not talked about 914's before. My first Porsche and a new one at that, was a 1973 2.0! Great car. BTW 000 magazine has a nice article about a custom build 914 in the back of the magazine.

Eduardo, I love this thread and your unhurried, lovely writing. While drinking my morning coffee I got onto Rennlist for a little inspiration to try tuning my carbs (again!) on my 75 914 in Scarlet Red. I also have an 87 944 Turbo in Nautic Blue, and then my 97 Boxster in Glacier White. All lovely and satisfying to own! Would love to hear more of your story...

Thank you for all the comments...
But time has come to sell the rare 'Ravenna Green' 914 2.0. See Classified Ad here on Rennlist (link below).
I just can't handle not having a/c in Scottsdale. This is a driver...not a concours car. But it the motor is very
strong & one of it's best selling points beside that's it's a desirable 1973 2.0 & it's an authentic 'Ravenna Green'
914 with a PCNA Certificate of Authenticity to prove it. $32K or best offer.

I received some good advice from Tom on the 914 World forum where I
also listed this 1973 914 2.0 for sale. Here is the post that I added:
QUOTE(Tom_T @ Oct 22 2018, 08:16 AM)
Hi Eduardo,
You might want to put in some of the back history of this nice Ravenna
back in NC before you got it, since it was advertised & I believe sold on
914world then, & a lot of people wanted it, because it was so nice (same
for your Rennlist & other ads). Any of the history & documents back to
day one are always good for a well kept 914 or any Porsche.
It's really too bad that it didn't work for you in PHX, but I understand
having to drive my 73 2L in suit & tie for work back in it's DD days 70s-
80s when it got to the 90s-100s+ here in SoCal!
Your 914's production date is 3 days after mine was 1st sold in CA (I'm
2nd owner 31.5 months later), so it's an early 73 MY 2.0 & in the "914S"
era, as well as being super clean. You could eat off that engine & early
"crosshatch" airbox!
Good Luck!
Tom

Thanks Tom for that suggestion. I found this 1973 914 2.0 in YouTube in 2016
when I decided to look specifically for a 'Ravenna Green' example. I just love
that color...and colors in Porsches is my passion as some of you know from my
many posts in Rennlist (991 gt3, 991 & 981 forums).
https://rennlist.com/forums/991-gt3-gt3rs-and-911r-229/
Here is the video where I first saw this car. It was posted by Black Forest Racing
in Denver, NC where 914 racing mechanic John Forbes operates his business. And
he was the one that totally rebuilt the engine for this car & supervised it's restoration...
although not to concours standards. But this is one of the best engines I have ever
experienced in a 914!
I contacted John Forbes in the summer of 2016 and his son put me in touch with
the owner that had purchased the vehicle right after the car was put up for sale
in 2015. This gentleman contacted me as he was interested in selling it to raise
funds for his 914 gt tribute project & emailed me the following report:
"Hi Eduardo,
I am the owner of the Ravenna Green 1973 Porsche 914-2.0 that John Forbes
and Black Forest Racing(BFR) sold to me on 6/2/15. I purchased the car for
$18,000 and have receipts for additional improvements costing over $9,000.
I am in no hurry to sell the car and have already turned down an offer for
$20,000. I would like to sell the car (if I find the right buyer) as it is the
most desirable year and engine in a very rare and desirable color combination.
The car was taken apart and restored to a driver quality level by BFR. The
entire floor pan was replaced and the hell hole was repaired with new metal.
Both of these corrections were done by a skilled fabricator who I have entrusted
to build a 916-GT clone. I have the Porsche COA verifying how this car was born.
John advised me that the engine case and transmission are matching numbers.
The engine was hand built by John and included new cylinders and pistons, a
mild camshaft upgrade and a 3-angle valve job.I have driven the car around
3,000 miles and it runs perfectly—easy to start, powerful, smooth and no oil
consumption or leakage. Just changed the oil using correct Zinc containing
oil and OEM oil filter. Just had John rebuild the transmission and all he had
to replace were 2 synchros and an operating?? ring??. All gauges work, no
smoking from exhaust and strong runner. I would get in this car and take a
trip with no worries.
I had paintless dent removal work on rear decklid and had paint professionally
cut and buffed as the paint was never touched after it was sprayed and it did
not look good. Huge improvement! Interior appears to be all original with the
exception of new carpeting. Interior is inn good but not great condition. Dash
pad has 1 very small defect but no cracks and each door panel has a small area
of cracking.Gauges look good and I had the speedometer/odometer rebuilt and
the clock was also rebuilt and functional. There is no radio. Seats are in good
condition with no defects.
After purchasing the car, I turned it over to an old friend who was chief mechanic
on Sebastien Bourdais’s INDY car at Newman-Haas Racing and his car won the
Champ Car World Series Championship four years in a row. He currently works
at Joe Gibbs Racing in the Engineering Dept. My friend owned a 914 for many
years and I hired him to go over the entire car. Needless to say, he is an outstanding
mechanic who goes for perfection. He went over the entire electrical system and
thoroughly cleaned the main fuse box and all the grounds and cable ends throughout
the car. The engine compartment was restored to near concours standards with
all the tin blasted and repainted. The fuel injection wiring harnesses and spark plug
wires were replaced with fully reconditioned wiring. New nuts and bolts were used
in the engine compartment and after periodic cleaning this part of the car is outstanding.
Looks like a new car when viewing the engine compartment. Shift linkage was
completely rebuilt and car shifts as good as a new 914. New starter and clutch
cable. Major tune up with valves properly adjusted and new plugs, etc.
Overall, this car is an outstanding driver quality car and very roadworthy for an
extended trip. I have receipts for all the new parts and work and you could not
build a 914-2.0 to this level in the $ 20Ks. Please email to set up a phone call
if you are interested in a delayed purchase of this car.I would welcome an
independent inspection/appraisal if you are unable to come test drive the car
before making an offer.
My 916 GT replica is going to cost me 70-80K dollars and the car will not be
finished for another 6 months. The only way I will part with the car now is if
I receive a strong offer to compensate me for selling this great car early. I
drive the car routinely and park my 640HP Shelby GT500 as the 914 is such
fun to drive.
Look forward to hearing from you if you are still interested in the car.
Sincerely,"

Let me see if I can find the original thread where this car was discussed here on
914 World when it was for sale in 2015 and I'll post it.
***
I have invested an additional $9000+ at Patrick Motorsports since I purchased
the car in the Fall of 2016. If anyone is interested, I can post the detailed invoice
listing all the items that were worked on, or added, by Patrick Motorsports. They
include turbo tie rod ends, new Bilstein Sport shocks, new H4 driving lights, new
sealed Odyssey battery, replaced fuel lines, new German weave carpeting in cabin,
new alternator/generator, etc, etc, etc!
Regardless all of these improvements I have made, I can't get around the fact
that A/C is quite necessary here in Scottsdale to enjoy this car year-round. This
isn't cool & foggy Carmel, CA where I previously lived for 16 years & whose
coastal climate would make it perfect as a daily driver for this 914 2.0!
I encourage anyone interested in purchasing this 1973 914 2.0 to pay me a
visit & see it for yourself to make sure you know its condition & feel it's strong
engine.

Eduardo

Eduardo is a friend here in north Scottsdale- we found each other while out cruising in our 914's one sunny day ... I've driven the car a few times and can vouch for it. Very clean and it runs great!! I'm actually surprised he's selling it but there is a rumour going around he wants one of those Italian F cars!! ( I think he'll regret trading from a German car...)

*
I also sold my 'Signal Green' 2015 .1 991 gt3 last year and might even switch from my 2016 Audi RS7.
It's nice to mix it up every once in a while!
*
The Fiat I am hoping to get is a 488 Spider. It's a bucket list sort of thing since I have never owned a Ferrari.
Indeed it's awfully expensive...new or used. Only three years factory warranty...althought now they provide
a seven year 'service' (which amounts to an oil change @ year). And it's dual clutch. No manual. Lots of
negatives I know. But I want to scratch that itch before I am too old to get into any of these low sport cars.
*
I am not totally abandoning Porsche. I still have my original paint / 57K miles 'Crystal Blue' 911E Targa!
*
And I have my 2017 .2 991S Coupe. At least for a short while since that is also being listed for sale here at Rennlist 'Vehicle Classifieds':
https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...and-spasm.html
*
And I have had for almost two years the #2 position on the waiting list of my Porsche dealer for the 718-era Boxster Spyder.
*
So I am not abandoning Porsche or automobiles made in 'das vaterland'. At 68 years of age, and having been a Porsche
customer since 1973, I am still dance to the tune of 'Deutschland über alles'. But I am not particularly happy with PAG at
the moment, given how badly they are handling PTS and also for allowing dealers to engage in the ADM abuse. I have
never seen a corporation utilize their best & most loyal customers to subsidize their dealers' profit margins so boldly &
flagrantly! But PCNA & PAG are OK with it because it allows them to push more Panameras & other less desirable cars
on their US distribution channels. They will soon find out, when leaner economic times come back, that this was a very
shortsighted policy.
Ferrari is not without it's own issues. But at least dealers have to sell their cars at MSRP to the original customer. And
while the models are 'hot' (meaning first few years after they are released), dealers get them back from their VIP customers
& re-sell them at a profit. But we are now almost at the end of the 488 model cycle & I have been able to get an allocation
for a 488 Spider at MSRP without having to kiss *** or pay a premium. That was not available to me from 2016 until
now. This doesn't happen often at Ferrari...but when it does, you have to take advantage of it.
Here is what my 488 Spider might look like. Sort of like Ronald McDonald's car when you think about it! But I am a real
sucker for their 'Rosso' interior with deviated stitching and love the 'Giallo' paint they offer. So much better than Porsche's
current 'Racing Yellow' which has too much 'green' tint. And their two-tone exterior color with a 'Nero' (black) deviating top
is seldom (if ever) offered by any other car manufacturer. I find that a really a cool & innovative option!
