Should I? '75 914
Ok thanks in advance to any help you wonderful people can give. I have stumbled upon a 914 for sale and have absolutely now idea what these cars value at. I have spent the better part of 3 hours looking at the web and its group of 914 sites but would like some input from all of you; please.
So let’s begin.
1975 1.8 l
Original owner
Resent valve job
91,000 miles
The service book up to date until 70,000 then ended
Only rust is on the passenger door (Plugged weep holes?).
The car has had the right rear 1/4 panel and door repainted the rest of the car is original
Black
Did Porsche make a Lux version of this car?
Chrome wheels
Chrome Engine vents and window trim
There is a Porsche reflector over the Lisc. plate
It will need new door panels (Someone added speakers)
It needs a brake light switch but the rest of electrical seems to work
I have only spent 30 min. with this car so I will need to get it on a rack
Synchro’s a little weak and the linkage is loose just like all 901’s
The engine fired right up but I did notice a little smoke (Rings ?)
The body is overall straight but there are a few door dings (Minor)
New tires
Rubber is OK some of the seals will have to be replaced
Top in good shape no apparent damage
Will need some repair on the drivers seat cover
The carpet should be replaced
The engine seems to have all the factory smog and the exhaust is factory
I do not think this car has ever been modified, very stock.
I believe I can have this car for around 4,000.00 and Im not sure thats a value.
My goal is to let my wife drive it for the summer and learn how to use the stick shift and then sell it. Any thoughts would help.

Chrome wheels are aftermarket- only OEM steelies were gray painted. Rust is the main thing- look under rockers and see if jack points seem solid- look under the battery in the hell hole. Paint looked pretty tired, but if it pretty straight and you could get it for under 4K it may not too bad a deal...
At least it's not a tailshifter but that isn't the easiest car to learn to drive a stick on!! First gear with really confuse them!!

No such thing as Lux version- had appearance group option which gave you chrome bumpers (on pre-1975 cars) and vinyl sail planes etc. Nice wipers too...

I saw that after I looked at the picture. I have no problem jumping into a small restore but I'm not sure this is the right year or car for that matter. The only thing that keeps bringing me back is original paint and relatively small amoun
t of body work. Is '75 with it's smog a worthy contender. I think in Cali we don't have to smog on '75 back.

75 and 76 were not as desirable especially Cali cars due to VERY restrictive smog crap. Also those bumpers are not that attractive to a lot of us... If it's a GREAT car, you can retrofit the earlier bumpers without a ton of work, but not worth it if you're not going to keep it

74 will have a side shifter- much better linkage, went from tail shifter (linkage way in back) in '72- BIG improvement. You can change it on earlier cars ( I did it on my '71 a long time ago) but is expensive to find all the parts...

If the purpose is for someone to learn how to drive stick, spend less on a used "honda" type car. I imagine that 914 is sitting on lots of rust you just didn't know was there.

My first car was a '70 tail shifter.. with carbs.. and I lived on a hill.. all items that made me quite good at shifting and manual driving.. or was that churning butter I couldn't believe how nice my next 914 (side shifter with a short shift kit) could be shifted in comparison.. and even that would be considered vague and long throwed compared to the new cars!
