Default Broken Crank

Broke the crank in my 2270. Broke in the webbing between the rod journals for cylinders 1 and 3. I'll have to figure out what to do know.

WOOF?

You got enough JB weld there? I've got some here if you need it.

Cool. Make sure you use something to hold it in place while it's curing.

I recommend a shoelace.

Or maybe a couple of them. I mean that is a high precision part. Yeah and get those nice wide shoelaces.

As I mentioned on 914world Matt, I have a 2270 crank on the shelf. It has some cosmetic damage to the journals from an exploded pistons but it looks like you do a lot of modification to the journals anyway... It is at McMark's shop in Sonoma CA and if you want it get a hold of either him or me...

What did that sound like when it went??? What other damage before you could turn it off?? Could have looked something like Vettels Renault when it let go, of course it was probably going over about 4X the revs when it did...

I was coming up the highway hard in fourth and shifted to fifth. Pulled good for a couple of seconds, then it sounded like it went down a cyclinder for about 2 seconds (probably when the crank broke), then it shut off (when it seized the main bearing). I put the clutch in and tried to jump it again and it just slipped the clutch.

There was nothing wrong except for the seized bearing and the broken crank. The heads, pistons, cylinders, rods are all fine. It messed up the dowel pin for the bearing a little bit, but with some ingenuity I think I can save the case.

Holy smokes! That's the same DPR crank I have.

How many miles did you get on it?

The crank is about 7 years old. Probably had 60 track events (120 days) and 30k miles. This is a complete guess.

The motor is well built and runs a web 86b/c cam. Never dynoed it, but it was putting out around 175 horse.

Posting over on the 914world boards, it seems like broken cranks are becoming more common. I wish it would have happened to someone else though....

Indicated and not with stock gearing, I assume.
