What's your 914 "project" this week?

What are 993 motors going for? A new 996 motor from Porsche is about $10-$12k.
Personally, I think the air cooled is the way to go. You'll likely have to widen the engine bay to fit either.

Just a 914. I would restore a 914/6 back to factory original only, with maybe some internal engine upgrades. But I dont belive in ruining neat collector cars. They are what they are, and were in most case, something special in their day. That is why they are collector cars today.

I can get 996 motors for about $7500 and 993 motors for about $10000. The ONLY reasons that I am even thinking of doing the 996 motor is that you get more HP for the money, and a Boxster S transmission would bolt up to it and be a much better transmission then the 915 or 901 trans.

I agree with you, but then I would be dealing with the 915 or 901 transmission. I would love to drive a car that has one of these transmissions set up. If I knew that one of these transmissions could shift smooth and fast and be up to the torque levels a 993 motor has then 993 motor all the way. Which is probably the way I will go, but it would sure be fun to jump on the trans. like you can in the boxster S.

What happens when you jump on a Boxster S that a 901 or a 915 couldn't handle. If you are talking about doing a burn out then I don't know many clutches that will take it.

I guess my main question is how smooth and crisp can a 901 or 915 shift in these cars. What I really need to do is take a trip down to Patrick motorsports to drive one that is in the 914 and that is rebuilt. Most 914's shift like crap compared to the boxster. (cable systems)

While I think that my 914 shifts reasonably well, it leaves much to be desired. And for some reason after I put the shifter back into the car (with all new bushings at that) the shifting seems MORE sloppy. I'm thinking I might need to rebuild the old transmission. The first time I went to change the fluid, NOTHING came out. Still worked pretty sweet though!

.
I think it must be possible to install one of the boxster cable type shifter systems in a 914.
My 914 has a traditional sloppy gearchange which works well unless you worry and think about it.
I must admit that the original design was rubbish and in my almost restored car I've swapped the original linkage for the side shifter linkage.

This weekend it is Elephant Bushings front and rear. Threw in some new ball joints just because. Discovered an ASSHAT that I paid to do some work on the car installed my rack spacers wrong. He had them under the suspension crossmember instead of under the rack. Brad Roberts got a big kick out of that because the ASSHAT is always telling people how much more he knows about 914's than established experts. Fool.
When I finish this weekend, the car will go to a shop in Sac for a corner balanced alignment. It will have camber plates and monoballs, Tarret Bar, PROPERLY INSTALLED rack spacers aka bump steer kit, 180# springs, and Elephant Bushings. Also, for good measure the stock suspension components involved have been powdercoated. Should be sweet! Oh, and she will be wearing 16X6 5 lug Fuchs!

I just need to drive my 914. I don't think I have driven it in 3 weeks. It has been raining everyday so I am worried about taking it out and I don't want to commute 45 miles with it in rush hour either.

Nah no playtime for a while. I'm getting all the seals together. Not to mention trying to figure out how to put the seals in the doors and the glass and all that junk back together.

Good morning guys, I'll add my project up here to keep things new. I've got a '73 Marathon blue car I'm going to start stripping this weekend to get ready for some new rockers and paint. Planning on a casual winter project to get her looking new again, and also starting to strip the extra 2.0 engine on a stand to begin the rebuild process. I'll have to put some pics up later as my damn digital was stolen at a party about two weeks ago
