Police and 914's

Tigershark- Euro rear lenses have a red brake & running lense, amber directional lense and a white reverse light all on one piece. Totally legal anywhere in the US. OEM US lenses were all red except the white reverse light.
I recall that you have to pull the running bulb on the amber section so that the amber doesn't light up when turning on the running lights. Could be wrong about that- it's been 25 years since I changed mine over.....

I think Tigershark is going to be turning us all in to the Police. Just kidding, I don't know the rules of euro lenses since I have never been pulled over before this. My 911 has them as well and it has never been a problem. Best wishes - Jay

I once was pulled over in my 911 turbo for "illegal use of fowl (sic) weather lights." (I had my fog lights on.) I looked it up in the local code and found that the 911 was in compliance and that the cop didn't know what he was talking about. In fact, Porsches are hardwired in such a way that you CAN'T run on just fog lights,--they have to work with hte lowbeams (goign to high cuts them off). In Oklahoma (where this happened) you actually CAN run on JUST fogs without any headlights IF visibility is seriously impaired. But,--nothing in code precluded the use of fog lights with lowbeams at any time. (The cop merely gave me a warning). You sometimes have to CHALLENGE these guys, particularly on things we may know better than them,--like the rear turn signals in Yellow.

Good point Dan. I think I need to have my wife sit in the 914 and hit the brakes tonight and see how they light up. I have never followed my car at night so I don't know.

In some areas the police are cracking down on the aftermarket tailights that have clear outer lenses and utilize red/amber colored bulbs to light up. States have been updating inspection laws to eliminate those.

In case you haven't figured out what I do for a living by my posts, yes I'm in Law Enforcement. In PA you must have red lenses, not red bulbs under clear glass. The new pos mercury mountaineer has red leds that look like totally clear until they light up. I guess ford is trying to get the wannabes that can't afford an Escalade.

Actually, I was pulled over in a small NH town last week. I didn't get a ticket but they said the car was loud. So I went home and checked out the exhaust a little more up close and personal. What do I find? A big ol' hole in it. That is why the car was so loud. Needless to say I have a new exhaust on order. That should help with my police encounters! - Jay
