any one who has kept an eye on vintage porsches, and valuations has probably noted the sudden rise in values in the past few years for the 912. id say excellence in this this past month has been very acurate in thier latest values.
poor low end values are around 6,000 and excellent high end values are around 10,000. (yup goin up steadily over the last few years alright!) but on top of this, i had discoverd two bombshells when i came home from my 3 week treck to the rendezvous.
the fiorst is when i had recieved word that at the auction at the monterey historics that a new public record for a 912 at acution was set; $17,500. this right away spun around a number of heads in the 912 comunity. that price put us into a shock and realization that the days of a $10,000 pristine example will soon be coming to a close. especially with the number of collectors looking to invest and store away their vehicles and watch them climb and soar in value in the coming decades (ala 356 etc).
now, looking on ebay tonight i noticed somthing that has now dumb founded me. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...&category=6429
1ts of all there is no way this guy will be able to get the buy it now price. this is not to say it is a poor car or even a good car. infact it apprears to be well taken care of and in good shape, but by no means should it garner that much green. it has too many imperfections/incorrect items on it, as well as the fact that its not close to original.
if there are any 356 owners out there, i would like to get your opinions on this growing trend, and would also like to know how it was in the 70's and 80's when the 356 began to rise in value.
sure there is more to these cars than values.. thats not why i own mine at least. but this can and will effect the cost of work, and parts and future restoration of my car.
all i can say is that we in the 912 camp are definitly begining to see a period of change, and gain of attention, almost out of nowhere. in part this has to do with the formation of groups like the 912 registry in both the us and uk, as well attention gained elsewhere. very interesting stuff.

It's good to hear that the values are improving.
We have a 1969 912 Targa with a soft rear window.
We bought it new in '69. Never had the heart to part with it.
I haven't been able to get a good idea of the value since so few 69 soft window Targas were imported.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Arlyn,
there are very very few 69 soft windows out there PERIOD. i know of a guy (Cary Dunn) in tenn. who has a great example, who has been 'keeping tabs' of some sort, to figure out how many still exist. as far as value goes though, its all about condition, and originality. there is a 68 swt here in columbus for sale, for about 1200.. but its a rusted and rotted carcas, with out an engine.. we call this a parts car. if its all original.. down to every last detail, solid, no rust (i should say 99% no rust, as they all have some, somewhere), then there is no telling. an A quality car can go around 10K and up... if its concourse quality more.
the value guides dont consider the differences between swt and hwt, as very few swt's were ever made. but heres the latest valuation chart from the 912 registry http://www.912registry.org/faqs/value.htm
i highly recomend visiting and joining the 912 registry
www.912registry.org
also i recomend
www.bbs912.org as thats where most of the 912 faithful keep in touch online. talk to these guys, especially on the bay area and so cal boards. they know the values, they know the tech aspects, and everey in and out of these cars. they would love to hear about your car, and so would i!!!!
also, i am working on getting a mid west 912 gathering going next summer, most likely in june, in hocking hills ohio (very twisty senic mountianous area in southen ohio). im gonna be inviting all the guys from michigan, illinois, Pa, ky, ohio, etc to join in the fun. you should really come out!!

I'm not suprised.
I saw a 66 912 listed in pano a few months back. I believe the owner was asking 19,500. It was only in for a month so, I guess it was sold.
I have just about completed my 4 year+ restoration on my 66 912 and I will sell it due to the recent purchase of a 911. My 66 is for all pratical purposes a new car, rebuilt from top to bottom. It has the original tan leather interior in like new condition, new engine, suspension, seals, working am fm sw Blapunkt and so much, much more. I'll post some pictures soon.
I figure I have about 20,000 into it.

I rebuilt the engine myself using several books as a guide. I was fortunate enough to find a very nice standard crankshaft so it has standard main and rod bearings. Also, wide lobe cam and new big bore kit. The heads are being redone at a place called German Auto in Savannah, GA by the owner.
I should have the heads back next week. By the way, how much driving do you do in your 912 in the winter?

for the south east region, we will be having a meet in spring, in asheville NC. the south east region cordinator, steve is in georgia.
did that place also machine and balance the engine? how much are they running you? when i had mine done over the summer in cali, they were 1200 a head by Competition Engineering. do you still have the solex's and necht air cleaners? the PO of mine put on Dell'ortos, and theyre good, but ive been gettin the itch lately to find a set of solex carbs.

Hi Harry,
The shop did all the machine work. The owner, Rob Parker really knows his stuff. I just about sent the heads to Comp. Eng. but, I found Rob in the nick of time. He is only charging me labor at $80.00 per hour so, I hope I don't have to auction my children just to get them back. I can't wait to put it back together. I'll check out the 912 site.
Thanks,
Greg

the guys on the bbs912 site are the best!! the south east message board isnt the greatest, except for planning get togethers and asking about local info. the bay area and so cal boards are where the real gurus are, and thats where you go when you need to ask a question. they are the nicest guys, and will give you the best answers to your questions. also, alot of people in the 912 registry, if they have somthing for sale, parts, cars, diagrams, etc.. they will post it there to see if the 912 faithfull want first dibs. they are a resource unlike any other, and are priceless for their grand scale of information.
Greg, you will really like the gathering we have in asheville...
here's a link to some of the pics from the driving tour..

i know what you mean about the heads. i was broke after the 912 rendezvous, and im saving up for my winter and early spring projects. if i had kids, they would probably be on the auction block right now
what can i say, these cars are too addictive!

Hi Harry,
I have been checking all the 912 sites. I love the pictures! I have gone to the 912 registry many, many times looking for parts and answers. I love my 912 but, I have to say once it's done I'll have to sell it. Why sell it? Well, there will be nothing left to do with it. I bought an 84 Carrera Targa in August much to my wifes chagrin so, the 912 must go. I may pick up another project eventually. I just can't seem to not have something to work on in the garage. I forgot to tell you earlier that I have Webers on the 912. By the way, I grew up in Dayton and I remember the salt will lead a car to an early death.

what else is there to do with her when youre done?
well, you could always drive the heck out of her, enjoy her capabilities, enjoy driving her, and take appreciation into your own work.
you know some people actually like the way these things drive, even better than 911s.
all i am saying.. is give 12 a chance..
heck maybe she'll grow on ya. oh well if you do, im sure that someone will take her in and love every second that he owns her.

Once I get it out and break in the engine I could very well
change my mind. I do love the way it handles and I would like to take it to some shows.
I'll have to send a picture tomorrow if I can figure out how to do it through
the forum.

either way if you still have her, and havent sold her, bring her to the south east meet. i know me and everyone else would love to see her!
you grew up in dayton!? no way! next time youre up this way, there is a private porsche collection you should check out in dayton, which has a 959, carrera speedster. 550, and everything else under the sun, including an all orginal pristene 69 912 coupe with 12,000 original miles. there is a 912er with a concourse 69 coupe from san francisco, coming this christmas to visit her parents in cincy, and we were going to check it out, so she can finally see the collection.. if youre by chance going to be visiting family up here durring the holidays, let me know and we'll meet up and all 3 of us can check it out.

$23K US? That's a TAD excessive I think... of course, if someone offered me that kind of money for my car... well, I wouldn't stay dry long...
Still, the increasing values do make me wonder if it's time to swap in an original mill... 90hp? Sigh...

i agree that its excessive at this point, but if someone wants to sell it for that much, best of luck to them. if its a concourse original perfect car, no flaws, original everything.. yeah maye 20k for somthing like that, but other than that, 20k is jumping the gun. im guessing 8-12k for an great/excellent condition car. besides, it just makes ours go up in value with it, when they sell that high. although i love my nine dozen, if someone offered me 12 or so.. id take it, buy an all orginal california car to enjoy (most likley an early car too), with some cash left to upgrade a bit, or to at least drive it home.
you do know that 90 hp is stock.. you cn hot rod these engines out.. infact, jeff trask is pulling about 120 hp with his duane spencer motor, completely balanced, and meticuoulsy(sp) built. it is very reliable too from what i understand.
face it.. you can go orig. and get the hot rod HP, so you can be original, and still outlaw.
