Default 912 on eBay

Check this out; doesn't look like $32K to me even if it is a soft-window Targa.

Note VW engine, what appear to be VW seats, ill-fitting front and rear deck lids which could indicate something more serious lurking under them.

Who in their right mind would put a vw engine in a SWT? You guys know I'm a nut about that. Very, very stupid. I don't care what they say. The seat belts are wrong, the map pockets on the door panel are wrong, the seats, even if they are original to the 912, are upholstered wrong. They are correct about the rarity but that was ruined by the engine. A nice engine and trans will be 10K. You can find them for less but who would want anything other than perfect in a SWT. Not sure if the 901 trans is on the bug motor or is even compatible. I have heard of SWT conversions? Even if it is a SWT I say $18K. If you want 32K it has to have numbers matching engine and trans even though I think that fetish is also overblown but a SWT needs that to ask that. No pictures underneath?????? Needs more pictures if it's in rusty Ohio.

Looks like he may have bought it in Ohio, but it is currently in Spain. Nowhere near worth $32k.

I dunno. They certainly are on the rise.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Featu...orcev4exp=true This one is $40k and worth it.

I attended the Amelia Island value/tech session on Porsche's and even the Hagery panel said "look at about $50k for a super example of the 912" so well below that could be a safe bet.

I also saw this listing and wondered what the seller had been smoking to imagine that such a poorly 'restored' car might fetch so much money.

Here's another one that I think will give us a decent metric of where the market on these cars is headed. Less than 24 hours in and already at $15k.

Overall a nice car but the lavish use of obviously fresh undercoating bothers me. You can hide a lot of rust issues with that and some of the other body photos (not to mention the MI plates) seem to indicate that there are some. Just sayin' . . .

Love the seats.

I think if he was trying to be deceitful he wouldn't be showing photos of the little rust bubbles under the paint here and there. It's obviously not a rust free example and appears to be a car that was only recently put back into service after sitting for a long time. Certain cosmetic things were done while mechanicals weren't touched (see brake calipers, steering rack, and carbs).

I'll be interested in seeing where it goes. The wheels, seats and tool kit by themselves are $10k, so the true price of the car itself is going to be much less than what it actually sells for.

I like this one but I think the non-original interior hurts it:

That's a nice car. I believe the asking price is quite low actually. All the interior changes can easily be changed back with no extravagant cost . That's an odd roll bar haven't seen one like that but at least the rear seats remain. Seems like a low price for doing a 30K restoration investment. The sport seats aren't original but they are definitely nice. They look like Vintage or GTS aftermarket seats. I believe TRE makes those also. All those motors have to be balanced when rebuilt top to bottom at least that was what I was told when mine was done by Andial. Looks like it's in Europe?

That one is a pretty nice one. I have seen one here local that is also a good example. Nice to see these little cars get some appreciation too.

Only hit $19k and that was less than reserve so it didn't sell. I have to admit I am surprised. Far from a perfect car, but I figured it would go to $22-23K with the trinkets that are on it.

Maybe we'll see it relisted minus the Mahle's and seats.
