912 value for a long term project
I am looking at a 1968 912 project car. The car has been sitting in a garage for the past 10 years and never started. Interior is shot with seat final split all over. It was a ca car in the beginning and brought up to Seattle years ago when it was under coated. Body is pretty straight with a few dings and also has some rust bubbles as a result of being repainted 15 years ago. All rubber liners are crumbling. Has steel crime wheels with a bunch of surface rust. Bottom line is it looks pretty good on surface but sure it has a bunch of hidden surprises.
what kind of offer would you give on such a car?

Pictures please. Possible repairs; Motor rebuild 7-10K. Upholstery 3-4K. Paint and body 7-10K. Rust anywhere? Undercoating? Headliner? Carpet? Missing original parts and/or fabrications? Wheels need resto? Suspension condition? Buying these cars just for the investment to flip for a profit is not viable unless you plan on getting really dirty. Restorations can run 30 to 40K. If your able to locate a 5 or 6 in a scale of 10 you might be able to spend far less to achieve a well rounded driver. A full engine rebuild is very expensive and will cost you as much as a 911 build. Painting and rust repair can kill you. Not everyone chooses to go with a bare metal paint job but if there is an issue with rust there probably is no choice. Bare metal can cost upwards of 10-12K even if you strip the interior yourself. Check the following areas for rust. Floor pans, parcel shelf, rockers, battery boxes, rear window bottom corners, suspension pan, torsion bars and the interior panels under the quarter windows. I would never buy a car that has been sitting for an extended period of time without checking these locations. Just my long dragged out 2 cents. Post some pictures. Going by what you have listed I would say 3 to 5K without a running engine.

Going on what you have said I'd walk away fast, unless you are looking for a very expensive hobby.

An expensive hobby it is. That's why flippin' cars for a profit just isn't viable. It's obviously profitable for the restoration shops but most people restore their SWB and LWB cars for pleasure due to cost and to keep them to drive with pleasure especially a 912. The SWB and LWB 911 goes for almost twice the price even though almost the ONLY difference is the engine.

Here are pics of the car. Seller has not put it for sale yet but it looks like is willing to let me have it for $2K to avoid the hassle. Since I already have a 997 and 996, this would be more a long term project though would be great if I could get it running short term and then just see what I would want to do long term....whether its a restore or a putzing around on weekend project. THoughts?

Well you guys definitely made me feel better but as you know the acquisition price is generally irrelevant if you look at the total cost of restoration. Still its a good start. I also got all of the receipts for the car back to 1973 when the owner bought it from the first owner in CA and I found the following:
1) 93K miles with a complete engine rebuild in 1992 at 69K miles. Car parked somewhere about 1995 and never left the garage after that. So status of engine is uncertain.
2) Repainted in 1994 as a result of some sort of Accident that amounted to about $1400 in damages
3) The car did seem to eat spark plugs and seemed to be high maintenance.
4) In 73 it was undercoated both fortunately and unfortunately.
5) Its a four speed.
I plan on have a mechanic friend scope it and see if he can get it started.
I am not a fan of the wheels but know some folks prefer....not I though so I will look for a set of Fuchs 6x15s if I can get them at reasonable cost....so then I will sell theses wheels. If I can find any I may just stick with these. Also need to find some seats though I may consider getting new covers. Maybe one of you guys have some ideas on both these issues.
Anyway, I will keep you posted. Will try to document progress but is likely to be a multiyear project.
I must say I do like the fact that these cars are relatively rare with a small community of followers. I feel blessed to have a longhood, 996 track car and 997.2 C4S. Living my childhood dream...
