eduacate me!! 912vs911

The major difference between a 911 and a 912 is the motor. The 911 has a flat 6 cyl while the 912 has a flat 4 cyl. If the car you are looking at has a 2.7L motor, at some point the original one was replaced with a 911 6 cyl motor from a 1973-1977 911. A 912 of that vintage would have had a 1.6L 4 cyl motor. Here is a good resource to learn about 912's

1720???
Anyway, there are also other differences that you may want to consider. The front suspension is different, the tranny is different, the rear suspension is different, and the interior is usually different. I don't know if there are any internal structural differences between the bodies themselves. But, some do take 912 bodies and strip them and rebuild them as 911 engined race cars, etc.

the 1720 is an aftermarket upgrade - the factory delivered the 912s w/ the 1600 (actually, 1582cc) motor, named the 616/36 (or in the case of US in '68, the 616/39). basically much like the 356 1600SC motor (616/16), w/ slightly different heads. the late 356 "Normal" motor is also 1600 in stock form (616/15).
a stock (well, Webers...) '68 912 is sitting in my driveway right now. I don't own it... yet. but it is a light, quick, efficient, great handling car & the swb works just fine w/ the flat four...
