good points but im not a fan of the type 4, or Jake so i wont go there.
if you want power in a 616, John Benton is your man. twin plug, fi systems.. from mild to wild, he has done it (and on his own with his own parts he creates).

I used Duane to build my motor. if anyone has any questions or is thinking about using him feel free to PM me. I am very pleased over all with the engine and it runs like a striped *** ape. but due to other issues, i would think twice about using him again.
basically it goes down like this.. 3 mos after properly breaking it in i drove cross country. on the way there i had a carb fire due to an incompetent local mechanic who overtightened and stripped the distributor clamp (causing the dizzy to be just a hair loose that after 2500 miles it came loose and retarded the timing enough to back fire through the carb and light an air cleaner). i put the fire out, limped it to cali, and had the carb repaired. after getting it fixed in cali, and after the 912 rendezvous i drove to see duane and say hello and thank you for building such a bitchin motor. he knew about the issue and knew i didnt blame him at all -after all is was the bad mechanics fault. well when i was up there the car started running like **** cause the carb wasnt completely fixed. duane offered little to no help and showed no care or concern. not his fault and i dont blame him, but not exactly the way to treat a customer who was on a cross country trip. if he offered some real advice that would have been great, or even if he offered to look at it, repair or replace it for charge that would have been perfect. instead all i got was a shrug. i proceeded to limp it home after that and kept running into more carb issues.
for full details of what took place, please read

and

make sure to look at other posts in that thread as well.
again.. Duane is DAMN good and his engines are fantastic -tons of power, good torque and very smooth. but his customer skills lack.
btw.. if you really wanna find out about how the rest of the trip went and the hell i went through going home.. here is a good read![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

I will get Matt Romanowski to post over here. He built a 2.0 914 motor up to a 2.3 that puts out about 180HP and can run with anything up to a 993 in a straight line. - Jay

There are lots of ways to you can build a motor for a 912E. Jake is not the only game in town - lots of people have been building type IV motors for years and getting good power out of them.
Yeah, my motor is a 2270 with somewhere around 180 horsepower. It's really cool to go to somewhere like Watkins Glen and run down the back straight on the tail of a 993 or pass SC like they were standing still. Get out of the car and have people ask "What in that? A 3.6?" and be able to answer, "Nope, just a little four."

Matt is exactly right, his car can hang with almost anything. Best part is it sounds like a 4 as well. I love driving his car.

Wow. Those guys must be crappy drivers with terrible exits before the straights... Not to put down the 912 but even with 180hp, a 912 would be the equivalent of a 911S of tha era....if you updated the rest of the suspension, and there is no way that is as fast as a 993 if driven at the same level as you... It's cool that you have that sleeper 912 - I get that - but that 993 must have been driven by a newbie ;-) I'll give you the SC, just, if you have upgraded your suspension and put beefier tires ;-)
Still, good fun ! Food for thought should my motor blow !

I have driven been a passenger with Matt and he runs in Red for DE since he is an instructor. It is also in a 914, and Matt has AMAZING exit speed with this car. I have seen him pass 993's all day long. Some of these drivers I know and they are great drivers.

Ok, that makes sense... The thread was about 912s and you are talking about a 914. More modern suspension (probably well setup, as you mention), a central engined car - those are killer cars and light too, and you are an instructor...
It's not that I don't believe you are passing all sorts of cars, it's more that all drivers being equal, a stock 912 ( I thought we were discussing those, there was no mention of prepped 914s in your post, just a 914 motor...) even with 180hp will never in a million years be faster than a stock 993... I think you would agree....
Apple and oranges ;-)

Benton prepared my fathers 68 912 motor last year. Benton even cut him a deal on a replacement OEM crank when the original crank was found unusable. The things this guy knows about 912 motors is amazing.

Harry, Been doing fine! Car is now running strong so I've spent more time driving it now than talking about. My wife claimed that it had become a garage queen so I solved that last week by going to the Porsche Speedfest at the California Speedway and went 2 1/2 laps of the track at the lunch break. What an adrenalin rush!!! I'll send you some pics off line.
