1968 912

smog pump was put in the engines for one year only.. 68. it made the engine & heads weaker. most have had the smog pumps taken off by now, and most engines have been rebuilt since, thus eliminating those problems.

Hi
Thanks Harry, thanks for the info. It seems that a problem re any model of porsche sticks for life.
While i am here i am looking a buying a 1968 912, original engine, rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. Would this still be strong.
It has a cracked dash, how difficult is it to find a new dash and replace this. Are there any other alternatives (having it recovered).
Thanks
Rob

if the motor is a good rebuild you shuold have problems as the probs should be delt with when rebuuilt.. new (well rebuilt) motor no smog pump to eat at it. 68s can be very good, so dont let the probs get to you or worry you (unless an original smog pump is attached and running). no matter what get it checked out by a mechanic who knows 60's porsches.
68s are a bitch when it comes to new dashes.. its a one year dash, no longer made. more or less you will need a new dash cap... you need to speak to the british guys they know what to do. 68 interiors period are a one year only.
actually i believe i read an article in 911 and pw of one of the guys having his 68 reappolstered at south bound.. (somthing lke that was the shop..) looked like a very nice job. recovering is mostlikely the only real viable option.. the style is the same, they way they fit is different between the 65-67, the 68, and the 69 up.
anyways.. you need to ask the british guys where they get their stuff done
alot of the 912 brits post here
http://www.ddk-online.com/
oh and you need to see gaven joule.. http://www.912register.co.uk/
anyways.. a good 912 is original condition, all original bits, and a very strong engine built by a reputable source. if it was done by a hack, you'll soon find out in the comming years.
have the motor, body and suspension checked out.. everywhere. original solex carbs or webbers? you want solex's. webbers will do.. but solexs are much better when properly rebuilt and tuned.

30k.. should have no prioblems for a long time.. unless it was a half *** job.
when was a valve job last done? who built motor? either way it should last a long time. 80k on avg is resepcable engine life from some of the stuff ive heared.

Hi Harry
You are well informed it is southbound trimmers, i will check my old PW's. The guy selling seems to be very genuine, has owned the car since 1983.
Has all the reciepts from then and the reciept for the re build, i am going to ask him to fax me a copy so i can show my mechanic over here. He had the smog pump taken off but when he lived in california his mechanic had to put the vacum advance distributor back on for the smog test every 2 years, it was replaced with a mechanical. I think it still has the solex's
The car is in DC and after i have seen the next round of photos I am going to ask where he is in DC and probably ask some of the guys on the boards to recomend a pro to look it over for me.
Thanks harry

vacume advance dizzy isnt necessarly a bad thing. is it an 031? 022? 061?
the 031 is the king of the ill when it comes to 912 distributors.
if you come over here, to pick it up let me know. we are having a gathering in pensylvania and in north carolina this spring, and would love to have a guest. if you need the name of a wrench in DC, i know a few 912ers in the dc area who can give some suggestions for the ppi. dont use the owners wrench for the ppi.. you dont know how honest he is about his own work.
the article about southbound was from last year.. lemme look and see if i can find which issue.

btw.. what kind of mechanical advance dizzy is on it... if its an 009, its a sign that the owner may not know wjat they are doing.. or might not know any better as it is a vw ditrib. that works.. but does not have enough adance for the 912./356 motor.. but that dosent necessarly mean he was a complete numbscull.. an 050 is a better replacement and shows he knows a thing or 2, as its a better dstributor for the 912 than an 009. (but still not the best advance curve for these motors.. but close enough to still have some performance).
an 031 or 061 or 022 is a great thing though as they are the best ones.
