Default 991 turbo versus 930

I own what I have been calling a 1989 930, bought from Sloan. A friend who has had numerous Porsches/turbos insists that it is a 911 turbo, not a 930. I believe type 930 was the internal designation. Is it correct to call my car a 930 or is there a distinction? He also says no 930's were made in 1989.
Thanks for any information.

Well, as far as I know, there are 1348 people in this country that would disagree with him.

My 1989 owners manual says "911 Turbo" so does automans. I owned a 1976, and 1977 930. After that I bought a 1984 Euro 930 as there were no 930 cars imported after 1979. In 1986 the car was brought back as a 911 Turbo. Yes the internal code was 930. But is was brought back as a 911 Turbo. You wanna call it a 930? Your choice but it is a 911 Turbo.

All internal code 930,964,993,996,997 and 991 are referred to by Porsche as a 911 Turbo after 1986. Before 1986 you could have 930 Euro model and before 1979 you could have 930 USA model.

930 seems to be some short buzz word/ right of passage/impressive name but...if you have 1986 or newer huffed 911 car it is a 911 Turbo. Check your title. Check your bill of sale. Check your registration.

It is a 911 Turbo.

Wrong.

It was 1975 to 1979. 1979 was the last year of 930 USA cars.

Factory internal code is one thing but what Porsche called the car after 1979 was only available in Euro trim. Yes there was a 930 until 1985 in Europe when the confusion was stopped and all 911 Turbos were called 911 Turbos despite the internal code of 930.

930 cars with the internal code 930 were only available as a Euro edition until 1985. I imported one of those gray market cars and it did say 930 on the title (forget what the Germans call that piece of ownership).

As of 1986 there were no 930 cars marketed - Euro or USA.

They are 911 Turbos

1348 people should read the above from me. Disagreement without facts is what ? Just disagreement.

Please show me a 1986 to 1989 sales brochure for a 930.

The manual as well as the registration on my 1989 do state it's a 911 Turbo...

However, are you claiming that the earlier cars (1985 and under) were referenced in the owner manual and sales brochure as a 930? I understand it's an internal code, but I've never seen marketing material using this designation.

Exactly...marketed.

Every 911 made, since 1974, that was fitted with a turbine from the factory is, and can be called, a "911 turbo". Every 911 turbo made from 1974 to 1989 is a Typ 930, just as every 911 turbo made from 1991 to 1994 is a Typ 965.

No I did not claim that about Euro cars. I do not know what the manual or sales brochure said. I never got either. I said 'my' 1984 German 'title' said 930.

My 1976 and 1977 cars said 930 on all paperwork.

My 1989, 1991, 1992, 1997, and 2003 all said 911 Turbo on all paperwork.

The cutoff for calling a 911 with a blower a 930 is 1985 in Euro trim and 1979 in USA trim.

Automan...we clear yet? Yup I got your email whereby you are calling your car by its license plate number rather than say 'uncle' or 911 Turbo...as it were. All in the name of accuracy my friend.

The “930” designation was a Porsche + Audi and U.S. press term for 1978-1979 Turbos. From the Weissach perspective, all models from 1975-1989 were 930s. From a Porsche sales department perspective, all models from 1975-1989 were “Turbo” or “911 Turbo”.

1975-1977, Europe - Turbo
1976-1977, U.S. - Turbo Carrera
1978-1979, Europe – 911 Turbo
1978-1979, U.S. – 930
1980 – 1989, all markets – 911 Turbo (exception, slant nose was advertised as a 930S in U.S. brochures)

I'll vote for the Weissach perspective, all model years from ’75-89 are 930s.

Either way you're not wrong..since the inception these cars were suppose to be called 911 Turbo. That's what they were. Originally the fenders were welded on a Carrera body..oh wait...a 911 body. Today some call a new 911 Turbo a 991 Turbo. 991 is the internal code but it is still widely used. The 911 moniker is still alive and kicking...just seems that using internal codes is very accepting today. When ordering stock parts for your "930"...most items begin with #930..regardless of year...as I stated before, there really is no wrong answer here....
