Post WTB: 911 Turbo

I am looking to buy a 911 turbo on a <=$40k budget and would appreciate any leads and feedback.

Questions:

1) I'm intrigued by uniqueness and performance. Does the slantnose have any +/- qualities over-and-above the visual asthetics?

2) How much weight should I place on the value of a 5spd found stock on '89+ vehicles? What is cost and downside to swapping out the 4spd for '88 and older vehicles?

3) I had in mind acquiring an '89 930-'91C2. Can I get there and/or where should I set my sights?

Regards.

jjg,

I will only try to answer #3 question. The answer is YES you can.

I know of someone who recently bought a '91 C2 Turbo for low $40s, very low $40s. With great conditions exterior, interior, and mechanically and the mileage was over 50k miles.

With that in mind and you take your time to look, I am sure you will be able to find a great Turbo within your price. Make sure you have a PPI cary out, and a couple of thousand to take care of some maintenance issues or mods if they arise.

You can also look for more leads on www.911turbo.com. There's always someone posting Turbo forsale all the time.

Good luck,

Sonny Vo

JJG,

The slantnose option does not have any performance additions over an equally equipped standard model. I believe the 930S package available in either slantnose and standard has additional power enhancements.

Question 3 - Yes, I believe you can. I've seen 89s dipping into the 30s and 91/92s in the low 40s. The question you want to ask is do you want an older car (more crude and sporty) or a newer one (better suspension design and more creature comforts). I thought I wanted a newer one, but now that I have the older one, I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

Question 2 - When I went looking for a turbo, I also wanted a 5 speed car. After purchasing an 89 here is what I'v found out. It is expensive to swap a 5 speed into a 4 speed car. you have 2 choices purchase the RUF unit or swap a G50/50 from a newer car in. The former bolts in, the latter requires chassis modification. Contact Patrick Motorsports for more information regarding the swap. Thew are recognized as a good if not the best source for G50/50 swaps. They have ads in Excellence and Pano.

I've driven both the 4speed and 5speed cars, and from talking with owners it seems that the 4speed works better with stock horsepower cars and the 5speed works better for higher horsepower cars (400+), however, both are strong and get the job done.

JJG,

Know the feeling. I acquired a 1989 911 Turbo cabriolet about a month ago. Just under 50,000 miles for just under $40,000.

The newer cars may be more refined, but nothing attracts attention like the classic Turbo. And the five speed gear box lets you keep in the power band more effectively. Never been happier with my decision.

Good Luck in your search!

C.H.

Thanks C.H. - beautiful car. Since I live in San Diego, the merits of a cab are obvious. However, I also live within striking distance of Willow Springs and after having spent a day running a NASCAR around the track, I would like to occasionally visit with my Porsche. Won't I need a roll-bar if I track a convertible?

It all depends who's running the show at the track and the rules they go by. Personally, I don't like the flat top head look resulting from the car rolling over and skidding. I would strongly recommend a roll bar.

I personally would not want a cabriolet in a 911 or for that matter, a 930. At the speeds these brutes are capable of, just too much wind noise. The angle of the windshield doesn't help. The wind just slams right on it and the cabin turbulance would be unbearable at speeds over 80 mph.
And no matter how much a soft top road car is reinforced, convertibles just flex a little more than coupes when pushed hard.
Just my humble opinion.
One more thing to keep in mind, whichever model Porsche you go for. Spend the money and have a reputable Porsche specialist give it a thorough inspection (PPI).
Best luck,
