I did it for years with track time (DE) thrown in. I've had some great street cars since: 540i, WRX, etc, but I'm looking for another 930!

How long does this 11 mile drive take? If it's all freeway and only 15 minutes, the engine might not fully warm up. That reduces engine life. If there's a traffic light every 1/4 mile the tall first gear might not be very pleasant for you.

if i could afford a 930, it would be my daily driver. I dont understand this "dont drive your 930 to work to save miles" business. These cars are meant to be driven. The last thing I would to is let it sit in the garage and collect dust.

Okay my drive is about 5 or 6 miles and i am thinking og buying a 930. About half of the drive is on the freeway which is crowded and the there are about 10 lights b4 the freeway. Then of course there is the 4 block drive through down town b4 i get to my garage. I have a beater for the rain but i hate getting into it. Wadda yaa think can the 930 do it everyday. I am looking at dumping my carrera 3.2 for a 930

I don't think it is good idea to drive a 930 daily for that short a distance. The oil temp will barely up to operating temp in that short a distance. Just my 2 cents.

Do the 930's have 5 spd transmission or only 4 spd?

in response to the posts regarding 930's not being good for short trips, that is only true if you get on boost without being warmed up. if you stay off boost, they're more resistant to engine wear from not being warmed up than carreras, sc's or other 911's due to the low off-boost compression.

I use my 930 as a daily driver in Alaska from April through September. It drives just like a 911 if you stay out of the boost, and is way better when you get on it. It will undoubtedly cost you more per mile to drive than a Camery, but it will be equally more enjoyable. Mine has 87K miles on it, and then engine has been apart twice. The first time was due to a rock in the oil cooler and lost oil (before I owned it) and the second was due to errors in the first rebuild. The down side to my 10 mile commute is that the car is only really getting up to temp by the time I get where I am going, therefore I can't drive it hard the whole way. I have considered adding a remote start so that I can warm it up from my office, and then I can hammer it the second I get in it.

I commute in my 89 930 for about 50 miles everyday. It is meant to be driven and I notice the engine runs quite smoothly by making sure the turbocharger kicks in everyday. Like many of the other 930 owners, the drive always puts a smile on my face everytime. Enjoy yours and take it out on the highway!

Dan,

Go for it!

People just can't ehop checking out a Porsche Turbo. Bigets problem I find is people trying to get near it to look. Some seem to be jelous and seem to want to get in fort of you so you can't have all the fun.

If it is hot there, do be aware that the 930 Turbos do not have the best A/C. There are mods that can help I think.

Happy trails!

Keith

I'm a big advocate of driving them, but you need to get the oil hot enough to boil off the water that is a normal byproduct of combustion. An easy way to check if you are doing so is to take off your oil cap after shutdown and see if you have condensation on it - if so, you need to drive it more!

Just to add to the discussion on daily driving of a 930.....

I have a 79 930 and use it to drive to work when not driving my Cayenne. There is absolutely no reason to not drive a Turbo on a daily basis as long as you give the engine a chance to warm up to proper operating temps. I have asked two separate (reputable) firms that service Turbos here in the DFW area and both offer the same opinion - stay off of boost until the engine is up to operating temp. The lower compression ratios do help extend engine longevity as well.

If you have a 930, drive it. They are wonderful cars and give the driver unbelievable feedback.

Toby--out of curiosity--why not the Cayenne Turbo? You otherwise have first-hand experience with the joys of forced induction Porsches...

What do you think of the S?
