Post 930 as a Daily Driver?

I'm sure this topic has been done before but....am I nuts to even ask this question?

I'm considering a 62,000 mile '78 for a daily driver for a few months. Remember, this is Southern California so the weather will be fine. Only occasional light rain from here on. Your thoughts. Anyone done/doing this? My commute is only about 11 miles. Can do freeway or surface streets depending on time of day. Not bumper-to-bumper. Always moving at a decent rate. Your thoughts please

I'd love to drive my 930 everyday but...
I'd constantly worry about it, feel guilty
driving it because the miles were commuter
and not pleasure, and othre reasons that
haven't come to me right now. On the plus side,
You don't have to shift a whole lot with the
4 spd. If you take the highway, on ramps that
give the you the oppertunity for the classic
3,2,1, BOOST! as your slammed into the seat.
Everyone will give you attention, And last but not least, There's that unmistakable smile that
seems to extend past your ears while driving and
looking back at it in the parking lot. I guess
what I'm trying to say is a 930 daily driver sounds like one hell of a good time. Go for it.

Pete, Thanks for the encouragement. May I be rude and ask what you paid for your '77 and when? I'm thinking it will take between 20 and 25K to get this one. I won't go more....I don't think!

Notice also that you have a 944. Is that your daily driver? I might keep mine. It's pristine and no noe would give me it's worth in (slower)driving pleasure.

Sarah, I saw an earlier post where you are standing next to your car. It's gorgeous. Are those 17 or 18 Twists?

I use mine as a daily driver, no issues except for a failed throwout bearing once after a long commute in heavy traffic.

That smile from ear to ear? Its known as a PERMAGRIN. Only PORSCHE drivers experience it, and it does not go away until you sell the car.

Absolutely use it as a daily driver.

I bought an '87 with 51,000 on it about 18 months ago. It now has 75,000+ and I cannot wait to get it to 100,000. It is fully modified, and I love driving this car. I drive it morning, noon, and night. Is there maintanance, sure. So what.

If you want to drive a Camary, then get one of those. If you want a smile on your face every time you get into or out of your car, buy the 930 and drive the wheels off of it!!!

Cars are meant to be driven. I cannot comprehend how people will spend this kind of money on a car and not enjoy it. Looking at a car in the garage is like having Pam Anderson in your bedroom, wrapped in plastic. Although that might be fun too.

Dan - They are 17s & we have spacers. They were on the car when we got it. I really like the look of them. We have the original fuchs too. We are going to see if we can put track tires on the fuchs (I don't know a lot about tires so I'm not sure). Thanks for the compliment!!

I have a 964 turbo and I don't use it as a daily driver. I would feel bad putting lots of miles on the car on a drive to work. This is a car I hope to have for a LONG time. I still drive it a lot, on the weekends and after work to say go to dinner or just for a drive. Its important to me to keep the car in as good shape as possible. Why take a boring drive to work in your porsche when you can drive your normal car and then really enjoy it on the weekend. It also makes you appreciate it more when you do get to drive it. JMHO

Dan,
Its not rude, I paid 19,000 for mine with
64,000 miles on it. Yeah, the 944 is my daily
driver. I wouldn't pay more then 25k either
b/c then your just paying for low miles
which is useless unless your a collector.

I used my 80 930 as a daily driver. It was great. The only problem I had was the need for speed (read boost). I had a tendancy to drive over the speed limit. I drive about 100 miles a day. I am not too worried about the mileage. I had a 944 Turbo which was probably a better daily driver in my opinion, but it was not nearly as fun as the 930. I sold the 951 and now drive a 95 M3 daily of which I am very happy. It doesn't get the smiles per mile the 930 does though. I drive the 930 every couple of days. Switching between old and new cars really alows you to appreciate how far ahead of the times Porsche was when the developed the 911 based cars.

Question, is it true the 930 engine needs to be rebuilt every 50-80k miles, or is that just a bad rumor? How reliable is the 930?

Depends on:
Driving Style
Warm Ups(full throttle/cold engine not good)
Extent of mods
how much boost
etc....
I think stck ones go for about 120,000 to 130,000
before a top end rebuild is necessary.
