Post Large K27 hybid turbo finished!

Well it is done, I have spent almost a year trying to get the perfect solution for our noble K27's. Initially my aim was to get the wheel sizes close to the TSO4-S04 Garrett. I did not achieve in getting a 60 mm compressor wheel. However, I got very close. It has a modern design, and is very efficient, the inducer measurement is 58mm vs the stock K27 7006 size of 52.46mm. That might not sound like much, but in fact it dwarfs the stock wheel.

The benefit to this design is that we can get more air into our engine sooner and more efficiently than a K28-K29 hybrid. And it fits with no modifications. The initial design starts with the 7006 platform, however the 7200 will work, in fact the 7200 will spool up faster and will finally have the top end air to meet most demands.

Kevin,

Cool, I bet Garrick will be happy. How do you think it will perform compared to my TV4129? Any before and after pictures?

Kevin.

I have a K27 with #11 hot housing and big compressor housing (don't know if it is a K29) Will this work as a core for your build.

I Also have a 7200 that I just installed. Would this be better.

Are you saying that your setup will: a) spool up as fast as a 7200 (full boost before 3000 rpm w headers), b) operate more effecently (less heat more hp) and, c) keep pushing air through 7000 rpm on a modified motor?

Have you done any dyno & drivability test yet? How did they go?

Thank you in advance!

Geoffrey;

It has taken me awhile to find a newer designed compressor wheel to compete with the late style Garretts. Your TV4129 has a compressor wheel inducer size of 2.2905" this wheel has a 2.2985 inducer wheel. The major diameter is larger with this conversion. In a stock configuration the K27-7006 the turbine wheel is larger than your wheel. I will post a picture as soon as Jennifer gets me a password.

Enclosed is the picture showing the stock wheel in the K27 compressor housing. The wheel to the left is the new 58mm wheel.

Here is a side by-side picture. Please note the addition compressor blades. This will bite more air.

I am excited about what Kevin did ... and can't wait to get it back. Now all I have to do is assemble my motor to try it.

I got one and after considering what I am doing with my motor ... all the mods and EFI, I decided that it may not have the capacity of handling the added demands of my motor ... I sold it to another member of the the list and I understand that he is very happy with it. The K27\7006 is recommended for higher horsepower modified motors ... what Kevin did with mine was to take the additional step of giving it additional top end without losing the bottom end. Once my motor is finally back together I will report back with actual results. My K27\7006 before the tear down was great .... I expect the hybrid to be even better.

I thank all of you for the emails and inquiries. I will put out a proposal to this fine community. I will lend this hybrid to anyone that has the curiosity of purchasing a larger turbo. Lets call it a try and buy. However, The turbo that I lend as a rotational test unit will have to come back to me within a reasonable amount of time. I am doing this because of the fact that I wish that someone lent me a unit when I was traveling the slippery slope of turbo upgrades.

I do caution those that this unit is based on the K27-7006 platform. I do not have a donor 7200. So in order for maximum performance SC, 964 cams, headers should be in order for this upgrade. Stock engines should start with a K27-7200.
