Anybody install an A.B.S. system in early 930?
Hey folks,
Has anybody installed a full proper A.B.S. system into an early '76-'89 930? I am not interested in paying somebody to install it. So I'm only interested in D.I.Y er's, how much did it cost & what system did you use?

Ok guys,
Here it is, I drive my car every single day to and from work, 52 miles a day! I live in the greater Seattle area, it rains (a lot), it snows, it hails, it freezes, it rains some more, occasionally it's sunny.
My commute is part semi-open country roads, part freeway, part stop-n-go traffic. I run BFG kdw's, their great in the dry, ok in slight wet conditions, down right suck in a down pour.....I would really like A.B.S.
With all these dim witted-cell phone talk'n-latte drink'n-make up putti'n on-crack smok'n-blind *** idiots on the road every stink'n day...... I would really like A.B.S.
I can lock the front up at will, at anything under 50mph in the dry. I can slide the front ANYTIME in the rain, 30-50-100 doesn't matter.....I would really like A.B.S.
Do you see my point of view now....."I think you can"

Before you get all worked up about an ABS system you might want to just price the system (1) and then see what parts you would have to change or hand make on your car(2). Maybe you could use some parts off of a later model Porsche. Off the top of my head you will need four new sensor brake rotors, ABS sensors for each wheel, Wiring harness, brake modulating valve and a computer to run it. Unless most of these things will fit your car ie, rotors to your hubs, you will have to get real creative. My advice is to sell your car to a caveman and buy a later model with ABS.

To install ABS in an earlier car, you'll need to source an ABS system hardware. My suggestion would be to use a 4 channel system from a 996 or Boxster, or alternatively from a 996 GT3 Cup car. These are integrated systems, so the controller (ECU) and pump are all one unit. You can wire it to be self contained and will communicate with it through an OBD II port and a Porsche System Tester 2 (for diagnostics and bleeding).
In the rear, you'll either modify the transmission output flange or machine a ring that bolts to the transmission output flange that has 48 "teeth". This could be small cap screws, or an actual toothed gear.
The front is where the challenge is given the design of the 930. You'll need to be creative in how you affix a ring to the front axle assembly.
You'll need to bend and modify your brake lines and add a second line running to the rear of the car.
Other than that, it is fairly straight forward. Good luck.

Hello Geoffrey,
I'm a career machinist by trade (presently not working in that arena), and I've just purchased a nice Bridgport milling machine and I'm presently looking for a decent lathe to buy. When I get both machines up and running, making parts-n-pieces is not of any concern.
My biggest concern is if the cost and effort is worth the end result. I like your suggestion of using a complete integrated stand alone system.
All my brake lines are braided stainless steel now, and I could easily make up alternate/additional lines as required.
I will contact L.A. dismantlers, and see about part pricing. This sounds like a real good next winter project, as I will probably need to take the car down for a top end rebuild at that time anyway.
Thanks for the direction.

The ABS is well worth it, especially if you have a stiff car. As you transition into turn-in, the weight comes off the front inside wheel and it begins to lock.
Be sure you get the 996 or Boxster 4 channel version, not the 3 channel version. Use 48 teeth on the wheels you make and utilize the factory mag sensors.

Hello Geoffery,
My car is stiff & low & I drive soley on the street. I try to be finished with braking prior to turn in just for that reason (doesn't always work). However, braking for turns is not my main interest in A.B.S. It is mainly for the a..hole that pulls out into my lane in the rain, or the car that takes a free right as I'm rolling through the intersection under green, or the....well you get the idea.
