Crap or Real deal '87 930 ?
OK, I'm still in the LEARNING process here and need some help picking '87 930 this apart.
Can some of you PorschAholics please chime in on this car. I have told myself I will not buy my 930 or 964 until I have learned enough that I am not a total danger to myself......and I'm not there yet.
Something seems wrong about this to me (more than just Title and milage?) , but I have not been in and out of these cars like you guys have.

The broken speedo is not that unusual and the explaniton seems ok. But the proof is in the PPI. It looks like a clean car but you need to learn about its present condition and its past if possible. If it checks out you might get it for a good price.

Looks quite nice. Rudy's right, a PPI and complete service documentation will tell more than anything. I wouldn't be too afraid of the miles (105K) provided it's been well maintained.
Appears to have aftermarket speaker in the door panels (includiing a small tweeter above each main speaker), but interior pictures aren't too clear on any other detail...but I did notice that the steering wheel is not what you would see on an '87 (should just be a straight panel across the center, no round center section). No big deal, could just be the difference between an '86 vs. '87 factory manufacturing cutoff.
This car has been mechanically maintained and had some minor upgrades to make the car more enjoyable. I would want to know more detail on those upgrades. I noticed what appears to be a Tial wastegate and non-stock larger intercooler. But that's about it. I think he also mentioned an updated BOV, which means he's running a longneck intercooler and did away with the boost recirculation manifold/piston valve assembly. More pictures of the engine bay would help.
With todays P-car market in the toilet, I would say the car is probably worth the 24K he's asking, provided it's well maintained.

Well, I emailed a buddy of mine who periodically transforms cars from ugly to nice and he sent me this report.
"Shannon, Cool car! It should be an ok deal around 20K? and make a great daily driver. I noticed the steering wheel is different from stock 87s. That could be a sign that it had an airbag deployment or a theft recovery.....could also explain the wheel replacement. Don't rely on title and history reports, they are not always accurate. A good check out would be warranted before purchase on this baby.
Check out this history report. This car has been all around the country. It was once in Conroe, TX or maybe still there? but more importantly the history starts in 1994 in Kentucky, which is a state that does not record salvage titles it was then sold at auction 2 times then titled in Florida then sold at same auction again a month later then sold back up north in Ohio. So in other words I would bet money that this car does have a washed title."

Looks good in the photos. Maybe a decent deal depending on how it checks out mechanically. Price seems realistic for a solid driver-quality car.
That steering wheel is from an older car (i think they changed over in '86)...its the same as what I have in my '79. I don't think Airbags were used in the 911 until the 964 era, so that would not be the reason for a change.
I personally would ditch the wheels and get the proper fuchs on there (or get some 17" fuchs replicas). I also don't fancy the silver instrument bezels, but these are just nits really.

A few other comments...I think that's a garretson intercooler. I also note that the fan and housing have been painted black. Its not unusual for people to paint or powder coat these parts. In this case, however, it looks like they sprayed the pulley portion of the fan too (which is cad plated and a different material than the fan). It could be just dirty or poor photo quality, but if that piece has been rattle canned, that would strike me as a pretty "ghetto" job. Here's a clear photo of the area I'm talking about...the pulley is at the center of the fan.
And I'd also point out that while this thing looks pretty clean in photos and you might be thinking its minty inside, when and if you see it in person, be prepared for it to not appear so fresh. The seller mentions that the seats are cracked and tired...doesn't really show in the photos.

Thanks for the input Jacob (it would be interesting to see if that fan and housing were rattle-canned) .......I was fairly interested in the car until I tried to communicate with the seller and got ZERO response. Even if I got a delayed response aat this point I would not pursue the car due to untimely communication....the dealings I have had on EBAY have all been positive in the past, but I suspect it is in large due to only dealing with VERY responsive sellers.
I appreciate the ideas brought to my attention on this car and it boosts my confidence in making good decisions on these P-cars in the future.

4th pic down showing left rear where tail light meets reflector strip has a rather large difference in alignment & height. Possible left rear damage in the past? Just my 2cents after viewing. Good luck & take your time.

My car had similar mileage when I bought it, it lasted about 1500 miles before coming home on a flatbed, complete rebuild spending an additional $25000, and its in great shape. Now for sale here:

Nice car (alot of Guard Reds out there for sale right now), Sorry to hear of your heartbreak on that one.
Did you have PPI before you bought....if so, what were the results of that.....did it give indications that such event was coming or was it clean ?

I knew when I bought that it would eventually need rebuilding, just not as soon as I had hoped! It was actually the fuel system that failed, but once I had the engine out I just kept on taking it apart until I had the crank in my hands. Ended up replacing or refurbishing everything including the cylinders and pistons and adding EFI on the way to the finish line. Its been a great experience owning the car and if I can't find a buyer I won't be sorry, because its a great car now. Just be careful buying any of these machines especially the turbos, they are an expensive hobby. Mileage can be deceiving, if the car has spent any time on a track then its been pushed; my theory is that 30minutes on a track (50miles) is equivalent to about 500 road miles of wear and tear. If I was buying one again I would be very wary of turbo cars in the low $20's unless you are anticipating a rebuild anyway.

if you don't know anything about 930's but insist on getting one, i would respectfully suggest you buy one from either a rennlist or pelican member with a decent reputation. bigtime financial hit for buying
a sick 930. jmho.

Please don't take this the wrong way.....but your comments indirectly suggest that PPI's have limited value......when in fact it seems like everyone on this board leans on PPI's ?! While buying from a member here or Pelican is probably a good idea, it severly limits my opportunities to find what fits me personally. Lastly....I suspect everyone starts with a learning process and thats why I am here.
