Default 1979 or 1987 930

Hello everyone I am finally getting closer to buying either a79 or87 930. The 1979 has 70,000miles ,however,a new rebuilt 3.4 lit by Jerry Woods 452hp tranny rebuild and Bilstein shocks all work by jerry woods.Car is brown on brown in great shape.According to owner no work to be done. The 1987 is venitian blue on white with I think non stock muffler and 1 bar spring (plan to visit the car next week) Car has 47500 miles. The price for the79=35k The price for the 87=30k I lookforward to peoples thoughts regarding invetment.I plan to visit both cars the 1987 next wednesday in L A.

My .02.

Not a ton of wisdom to impart. With that said, I will offer (3) useful suggestions: PPI, PPI, and PPI. I also do not hold myself out to be a collector of the turbo-charged version of the 911, although I do have two of the air-cooled iterations. Based solely on production numbers, and if production numbers in and of themselves may in some way shape the collectibility of a car, the 1979 may be a bit more collectible with 1,200 delivered to the US. However, the engine enhancements to the 1979, as good as they may be, will not likely serve to increase its value to a collector as the car is no longer bone stock.

According to my friend Don, who has a pristine 79', 930 with 20k original miles. After driving my 88' his impression was that my 88' handled much better than his 79'. I have not driven his. The later just have a few updates but do not know what might have been done that would make it handle that much better. I personally would choose the later model.

The '79 will obviously be alot faster the way it is set up, and the '87 will have the newer dash that has larger center and side AC ducts giving better AC ventilation, if it works at all...
The rest depends which one is in better condition, and the color...? I'm biased, my '87 is also venetian blue with linen interior.

I think the '87 is more desireble, but there isn't alot of difference. You have to drive them and have them checked out and decide which you like better.

I have a relatively stock 79 with 51k and an 86 with 96k and a rebuilt 3.4 with @ 1k on it. Its specs are very similar to the Jerry Woods motor. I prefer driving the 86 with the 3.4 because of all the hp. It has gotten to the point where the 79 seems a little mundane.

Buy the 1987.

It has a nicer interior setup (seats, steering wheel, console), and a nicer color combo. Also, half the miles equals half the stress on the body and suspension.

Lastly......brown on brown ??........uugghh.

I would make sure that the '79 will pass legal smog.

I guess as Bruce Anderson says " buy the best one you can afford". If it were me and as an investment, I would prefer stock and the 79 in a but in a different color.

I would take the car that is in the best condition. If they are both in the same condition I would take the 'sorted' '79 car.

think it comes down to what you like and use the car for, if want nice stock example the later model, but want to do DE days, etc. more performance/hot rod then the earlier car. Like many can attest to on this forum, once you have a couple bites of the mod sandwich, you're screwed, so consider that as well, either way, both sound great and good luck

I like the 79 cars because of the minimal smog (no cat). I think this makes it easier if you are interested in any mods and live in a place that does smog checks.
