Collector opinions/930 Turbo Targa
Hi all.
Probably just humoring myself, but as a 996 Targa owner I have been thinking about buying a 930 Turbo Targa. I have seen a few for sale, in a range of conditions. They seem to be pretty pricey, $30-50K, for their age. One in particular is at the lower end of the range, but has a sketchy ownership history. I'd be into a minor restoration project if it were worth it. But, I have no sense at all regarding the price range in which these cars should trade.
This dilemma probably faces all Targa buyers and sellers, but I'd welcome any and all thoughts about how to value such a beast. Thanks, in advance.

If I remeber correctly the Targa model 930 is at the bottom end of any model year in question. It seems like the Targa is just not that well liked. I had one and found it to be not a cabo and not a coupe. Then there is the problem of going out without the top and running into rain. I enjoyed the car but found that I like my coupe more.

The October '07 issue of excellence had a turbo market update article. It says there were only 299 turbo targas built from 1986 to 1989. Low value for an '87 was 22379 and high for an '89 was 41950. I know not everyone likes them, but I happen to love the targa. If I could have found a good one (at a decent price) in a good color, I would have probably bought it. They are rare.

Personally , I like Targa's. My 1st 911SC was a targa and I thought it was great. From a collector car perspective it makes sense to get something a little different from all the others.

In general, while the targas are clearly more rare (numerically), their market pricing does not reflect that. If anything, they often sell for less than comparable cabriolets and even coupes. I suppose that reflects the supply/demand curve in some way. But if you like targas, then it's a good situation for you. If you want something that'll appreciate in value, it's hard to predict if the relative rarity of targas will translate into future escalation of value. It certainly isn't true, right now.

One other thing I came across when I had a targa was the rear windshield is real expensive compared to other 911's. I had one painter tell me he would not remove or replace the rear window because of the difficulty and the chance of breaking it.

Thats interesting. Those rear windows are like tanks. I have stood on one before, dont ask me why. Thay are extremely durable and not much more difficult to get out than the front windsheild

Ooley Blackburn in Indiana has a very nice looking turbo targa for sale. None of these cars are really going to be appreciable investments for a long long time if ever. I was never a targa guy then my wife wanted one so we picked up the 87 carrera targa and I have to be honest it was a blast to be able to remove the roof when you wanted.

you know having also had a coupe, I love being able to cruise around with the top off but I hate all the rattling and squeaking and the wind noise when the top is on. I have to regularly grease all the seals with silicone to keep it from squeaking on every bump. Plus even after the top was redone by Dave at cars inc. it still gets wind under it at 150 so I also had to get a hard top for when I go to the track. Still working of fitting it.
