Posted on 993 board as well...

I may be buying a 1988 930 Turbo cabriolet... it's going to need some work, but I'm getting a decent price for it. I currently own a 1997 993 Narrow Body. I'm wondering the following;

Which of these 2 911's do you think will be more collectible in the future? Which of the two do you think would pay off to invest more resources on?

For the fellas on this board, what should I be aware of. It's a high milage car that was vandelized. PPI showed engine and transmission, brakes, in good condition. The work that needs to be done is interior and top.

Collectability is generally influenced by age and quantities. The 930 cab is 10 years older and probably was built in far fewer quantities. However, I would not buy either car as an investment. Buy the one you want to drive and have fun in. The 930 has already hit the bottom of the depreciation cycle and the 93 is getting close, if not already there.

very few cars should be considered an investment of anything other than "smiles per hour" while driving them. 930's and 993's included. There may be a few exceptions, but if your buying a car that needs work, thats not the kind that would be a investment grade choice. That being said, the 930 will hold its value better than a NA 993 in my opinion. Its certainly better in the "smiles per hour" ROI!

I've never quite understood the motivation of collectability as the weighting factor for my automotive purchases. If I can buy it right..great, if it becomes collectable while in my possession, wonderful. If it doesn't that's cool too because it's just sheet metal and I bought-it to enjoy!

This ain't real estate and chances are you'll loose on the mechanical speculation game!

Whether it becomes collectible or not, is not an issue as to whether I'm going to buy it. I'm going to buy it... It had a decent ppi performed by my mechanic who's known the car for the last 10 years, it's a second owner car, and the seller can't fix it so I'm giving him 7k for it. I just don't know if it's worth spending the money to use all OEM to make repairs or if I can skimp a little. I think I'll spend the money.. it'll be fun.

There will always be someone willing to pay a premium for a very nice original 930. I bought mine a little over 12mths ago for AU$57k and sold it four weeks ago for $69k. It was a very good original example, except for a minor repair. Had 110,00kms on the clock, with FSH. Lets face it, there will never be another car quite like the 930. I believe in years to come it will be known as the most influential road car Porsche has built.

Yasin contributes to quite a few forums including Pelican...who cares about paying a fee and red letters unless he's breaking a rule. Sorry, but he's got a point.

As far as subject matter contribution, the 930 is a better choice, but being a cab I think it would lose value over a coupe, not to mention that restoring it would yield a smaller ROI for investment purposes while losing its originality.

Use genuine parts, unless aftermarket parts are better. OEM are not genuine and not always as good...

As for your original question, a 911 turbo cab Vs a 911. Hmmm, not hard really is it.
