Hi folks,
I have a short shift kit fitted and the gear lever feels like that of a truck with lots of free play and it does not have the self center effect.
Everyone tells me that it is the characteristic of the 4 spd gearbox. However recently I drove my friend's SC with upgraded self center spring. The feel is so much better. There is a clear deference between 1st and reverse but not mine and it appears that there is also shift gate that clearly separates the different gears..
Wevo makes some kits... was wondering which is the best kit of these all that can make the old gearbox feel close to the G50... I reckon the gearbox feel really tells that the car is old... besides that, its a blast to drive!!!
Thank you guys!!!

The WEVO is high quality and replaces the stock unit very well. In addition, replace the shift coupler - its amazing what these two upgrades do for shift feel over stock.

With the Hargett you can retain your ebrake, you just have to adjust the wire to engage sooner. This is the setup I purchased as it gives the driver the best feel (from my research).

Inc,
I talked with a WEVO rep at the Ventura car show and he said that I could put it in from the passenger side with the seat in. He did say it would be easier with the seat out. It is basicaly removing the center console and the old shifter and replacing it with the new one. There is a little adjusting of the shift lever after it is installed and DonE is right about the coupler. If you have basic tools and a good back and don't weigh 300 pounds, then you should be able to do it.

I love my black Wevo... like night and day. yes it has the centering spring too. But, I also combined this with regearing 2, 3 and 4th gears. Great acceleration and sure shifting too. much better drivability.

One thing on the sloppy shifting of the 930 4 spd. I have read that although you can make the shifts more precise, it is not wise to try to increase the speed of the shifts. This you can do if the short shifter uses too much leverage to reduce the amount of travel of the shifter stick. What I read was that the 930 tranny was designed to do it's job but that the type of dogs and cones in the syncros were not the latest available at the time and that allowing the shift mechanism to have less force on it would lead to longer life for the components. Maybe someone with actual experience can chime in here about fast shifts.

No matter how much you spend on a shifter you still must not shift faster than the synchro's want to match the speeds.
It's still great to have a shorter shift and remember this will give you the driver less leverage to force the synchro's so as long as you do not rush/force you will be fine.
You just have to get to know how much pressure to put on the stick when the tranny is cold and how fast to move the stick when it's fully warmed up.
Use it, don't abuse it.

totally agree...
cannot expect it to work wonders, after all we know the gearbox belongs to the 1970s... shifting it fast really crunches the gears. Oh since we are talking about gearbox. How often do u guys replace the gearbox oil what mileage and what ratings do we use, i was told that we can only select one best oil to either protect the syncro or the LSD as they require different additives, having one will reduce another. Is Swepco really good? Anybody tried Redline or mobil?
If we use it hard, gotta maintain it well too...

I would say that if you crunch a shift you should change the oil. Also, remove the fork plate assy and remove any dog teeth that may have come off. If it gets in a bearing it will be an expensive repair...
