That's as toasty as I've ever seen it. What is normal on these cars?

If I recall, you have a '79, correct? Do you have a front mount or fender mount oil cooler? If fender mount, what type of cooler is it? What type and viscosity oil are you using? Do you have a numerical oil gauge? If not, then if your temp is getting to the second thin line at 10 o'clock, that is 120 deg C, or 248 deg F. Under what conditions, and for how long, was you oil temp around 240? I think most folks here would probably recommend keeping steady state oil temp below 225.

Here in Tampa [low- to mid-90's], I actually have to work my motor pretty strenuously [stop-n-go, 2nd gear, 50-60mph, 15-20 min] to warm the Mobil 1 15-50 up to 230-235. I do that to burn off any condensation in the system that "happens" to be present. As soon as I grab 3rd, I can watch the oil temp fall. And if I grab 5th at 50-60mph, my oil temp steady states around 200-205. Just one data point for you.

I forgot to give you one piece of information, I have the factory engine mounted oil cooler and the factory fender mounted carrera cooler with fan [which should activate around 240-245 deg F].

Mine's an 82. I never heard the fan kick on .... I wonder how I could test it? ... it does have the front fender oil cooler. I have a numerical gauge. I am running 20W 50. I was driving some stop and go traffic and the temp pretty much stayed around 240 for an hour or so.

242 is too high. Make sure you change your oil regularly during the summer at those temps. You probably have the POS trombone oil cooler from the factory. 225 would be more like it for normal ops. In the summer, mine is between 190 and 210 BUT I have very large coolers in each fender (no engine cooler tho). I have my fan set to come on at 210.

I agree with Don: that's pushing it. What kind of drive was it? Stop and go traffic? Interstate run? Unless it was changed out, I think your year still has the "crappy" trombone oil cooler. I think Porsche started fitting the Carrera style oil cooler in either '84 or '85. In '87, I think they came equiped with a fan. With outside temps in the mid 90s, mine stays between 190 and 210, also. I've got engine mods (notthing as crazy as Don), but I don't have any extra oil coolers, just what an '87 model came equiped with.

oooohh !! yes that is some good reading there.

I do have the front fender cooler, I am now trying to figure out if my temp sensor is wired up and working properly. Maybe this article will give me some good ideas, thanks.

Pelican also has some 190* and 200* (I think) thermostat switches for the oil cooler to start the fan a little earlier.

Actually, the temp was 212, not 242. When the needle was over the 210, it looked like the numbers were 240. Now with the needle out of the way I see it was actually 210. I am still getting to know this car.

...but I like the idea of a kick it on 190 fan !
