I know its tough to judge from a picutre but does anyone know what this color is and the paint code? I'm going to try to get it by a bodyshop to have them scan the paint but I have the rear bumper off right now waiting on my new exhaust

That does look like venetian blue.
It's hard to say for sure though because it will look more blueish in the sun and more grayish in the shade. Then there is the varying levels of color saturation and contrast with different digital camera's... to confuse it more.
My '87 is venetian blue also but with linen interior, and the correct paint code is L35U.
There is a sticker in the front trunk on the passenger side a little forward from the shock tower area with the paint code.
Congradulations, you got a beautiful car.

Well it didn't go as planned. I had the shop look for paint code L36P with no luck and then I mentioned L35U and he found it. I had them paint a small piece of metal for me to match up once I got home. On the way I kept looking at the piece they painted and said to myself that's the color, wrong when I got home to match it up it was darker and to much metallic in it.
I'm going to take my headlight ring tomorrow to show them this time the true color I need them to match.

that does look ven blue met, but I don't think it was available till '87 as an optional color, you must be right about it being custom. now I do remember the picture I'm downloading is way on the blue side, and your picture look much more correct for ven blu met. good luck with it.

If they mixed L35U correctly and it was sprayed on, not swabbed on. and then a few coats of clear sprayed over the color, then you would see how close it matches.
The metalic color alone likely swabbed on will look kind of like you describe.

We tried 35U with clear, to dark and to much metallic. We also tried 36U to light didn't match up at all. He gave me the name of his supplier that has a scanner which should be able to read the paint.
I'll get it over to them something next week.

I have slate grey and it's way too light for that, it's one of the best colors I've seen though, very nice indeed, sorry I'm no help! Good luck with it!

Have you contacted PCNA for a Certificate of Authenticity......Like Anthony I don't think it is Ven. Blue; ( it appears to have hints of brown and green).....which was a special order in 1987
It is beautiful example, what ever the color and it goes so well with the cork leather

Yes, I called last week and spoke with the lady at Porsche that does all the research and I asked her the only thing I really want out of this is my paint code. I told her the label under the hood reads L999 which we both knew it was match to order. She told me it wont give me that color code I need. She then said I'm sorry sir I can't help you with that, you probably wont be able to ever find that code. I then told her that would be the dumbest thing Porsche could do is not put that code somewhere in the car.
Well thanks to another guy on a different forum I found it this morning under the carpet in the trunk area on the inner right fender. I found its called Slate blue, Paint code L661/X6
