Ruf started applying their VIN iin 1982.

As to which is worth more, a Ruf VIN or a Ruf converted Porsche, there has been/still is so much debate regarding that.
I've heard that when Ruf couldn't be supplied "bodies-in-white", they'll go and purchase a Porsche for conversion. Don't know how much that is true.
Then the are those owners who purchased a Porsche, and then wanted something better and faster, then they'll take the Ruf conversion route.
Whether a Porsche has a Ruf VIN or it was a Ruf conversion, its reassuring that in the eyes of Ruf, they are all Ruf cars.

If the car is a true Ruf conversion than it has documentation stating that

Yes, but how do you tell the difference when you are considering parting with a large amount of money ?

There are several cars here in the US that had Ruf conversions done at a time when Ruf would ship the parts and fly a tech in from Germany to perform the conversion at the facility of one of thier authorized distributors. One such place was located in New Jersey... can't think of the name but I'm sure I have it somewhere... I think maybe Exclusive Motorcars.
It is also true that there were times when Ruf could not obtain "bodies in white" because Porsche had to meet worldwide dealer allocation and they purchased cars either through the dealer network etc..
Additionally, there was a time when Ruf was not a manufacturer.. but a tuner, and there are NA cars still around that were tuned by Ruf, had parts that were manufactured or fabricated by RUF..
I was personally fortunate enough to purchase one of these some years ago as a salvaged car, and it had all sorts of nifty little Ruf goddies on it, all of which I stripped away before dumping the shell..they've been on my little "S" since!
Oh, and what about the car before the Yellow Bird? I want to say that I've heard it calle the mule..it was a dark Forest Green either 78 or 79 SC. Anybody remembrt that one.
Either way... Ruf built or Ruf converted.. somebody spent a whole lot of money! You now get to own it at a discount. I think thats way cool!

Hmm,
Just looked at ebay link..
The foil decals in the engine bay (one on the alt strap, the other on the opening) are pretty hard to come by if it wasn't touched by Ruf. Certain things they guarded pretty close. Yeah anythins possible today with all the computer graphics, but that stuffs been on that car awhile. Might be worth checking out.
