Default Trying to avoid getting stranded

I posted a similar question on PP a few days ago and got no responses. But I'm considering a cross-country drive in my 930. Any advice on what spare parts to carry along to avoid getting stranded? I'm thinking simple/commonplace repairs, as opposed to actually rebuilding an engine or transmission at roadside. I've got fuses/relays/ignition coil/belt. The car is a stock '87 model.

Fuel filter, oil, tire repair kit, jumper cables, and light bulbs are the only other things I could think of without getting into the more serious ones like plugs and plug wires. Good luck.

I drove mine from DuBois, PA to Orlando, FL when I purchased it, a trip of approx 1,000 miles. I have stories from that trip! She only let me down once and it was a really stupid thing I should've seen. But, it was no harm, no foul and by the time I got home I had a list of everything I thought needed service/repair or replacement.

Its been running like a top ever since. In fact I just finished running her to Hilton Head, SC and back. Its about a 5 hour trip one-way, and she was purring right along at 90 with the rest of the pack the whole way up and down I-95. The more I run her, the stronger she seems to get. Its a great car for a 22-year-old vehicle.

I purchased the car in Orlando and drove it straight to the DC area. No problems what so ever; I hope you have a great trip!

You might consider buying an extra red relay that control the fuel pumps. I have a spare in my tool kit. There is nothing like a small roll of duct tape to mend many items temporarily. As mentioned above jumpers and a spare alternator belt. Of course the tools to replace it with. Make sure that your jack works and that you have the means to inflate the spare. I have a small scissor jack that actually works rather than use the killer jack that is OEM. If your car has lug locks on the wheels, make sure that you have the key to them. Ask me how I know this! Get some good CDs and relax. You'll probably not have any trouble and will have a great ride.

I always carry a fire extinguisher and air compressor with me, in addition to the items you mentioned above. Also the AAA card.

The turbo supplement shop manual, a multi-meter, and a spare rectangular yellow relay on the engine compartment relay tray.

Noah - check the archives on Pelican. A few years ago Warren (EarlyS Man) wrote an exhaustive list of things he carries on long trips. (You may not need the transmission gasket set - ha!)

Thanks for the responses. Thanks also for not suggesting I carry along a spare DME...

I'll take a look at the PP archives, but I didn't locate that thread you mentioned, Rarly, the first time around.

The "spare rectangular relay:" is that the relay for air flow sensor boost pressure? Or the one for ignition cut off? So far I only stash the round red and blacks in the trunk.

Carry a copy of that issue of Porsche Panorama that has all the regions' officers in it. You will be able to count on them for assistance across the country.
