Default Clutch pedal – feels crunchy and sticks

Prolly already asked, I remember reading something bout this here, but can't seem to find it...

When depressing the clutch, there is a 50/50 chance the pedal will stick in the fully
depressed position. I then tap it a few times and it starts the upward travel.

Also a 50/50 chance it will feel crunchy when depressing it!

I notice no weird vibration feedback on the pedal and it engages and disengages the
clutch at the correct travel points.

Clutch does no slip and apart from what I mentioned, works perfectly

The car is a 1987 930 / 915 tranny.
Anyone ran into this before???

This is seriously cutting into the joy factor

Most likely a bad cable. If you have any clutch work to do at all you should replace the cable any ways . So there is no risk in buying one and replacing it.

Could also be that the pedal box needs to be rebuilt. The plastic bushings down there can deteriorate and the metal bits can rust over time and cause these symptoms.

Thanks....

Ordered the bronze bushing upgrade kit from Pelican and will install this weekend

Figgered I would start with the cheapest fix and work upto the most expensive fix

Apparently I am the only one on R’list to have this problem.
So I thought I would post back after each of the DIY’s were done and report if it fixed it or not.

So maybe in the future any new 930 owners like myself will stumble across this thread and see how it was fixed.

This weekend I removed and installed all bushings in the clutch / brake pedal assembly with
bronze bushings and reinstalled pedal assembly.

Results: The clutch pedal no longer sticks in the down position, but there is still a little
bit of crunchiness in the feel of the clutch pedal movement.

Not as bad as before, the joy factor has definitely returned!
But still, I want a buttery smooth pedal movement.

One side note, when I removed the clutch cable clevis from the pedal assembly, the clutch cable immediately
rotated 180 degrees.
This was probably contributing to the problem. Before reinstalling it,
I loosened the locking nut and rotated the clevis back to its proper orientation.

Here are the next DIY’s I will perform in the order listed. I will post the results after each one.

1. New cable and assist spring
2. Replace Tran oil with Swepco oil (heard this can do wonders)
3. New clutch

I concur, probably a bad cable. Let us know what develops.

When these cars have not had the clutch done in a long while, dirt and crap builds up in the clutch fork pivot shaft bore. This can cause the pedal to get more stiff and even bind or feel "crunchy" if you will. Oftentimes the clutch pedal will bind up and then all the sudden pop back as you let the pedal out, making it trickier to drive the car smoothly.

If you replace the clutch, make sure you remove the clutch fork shaft while the tranny is out and clean it and the bore well, and replace the seals on the top and bottom. Also check the bowden tube for the clutch cable, ie that it's in the right position, isnt broken or missing, has a slight bow to it, etc.

Rod,
I had a sticky, crunching feel in my clutch pedal while I was at the track last time out. I thought it was the clutch, but it wasn't slipping in any gear. I looked in the clevis pin area on the cable and no problems, looked underneath and had a buddy depress the clutch pedal...It turned out to be the clutch helper spring for the shaft arm under the gearbox (the arm that the cable pulls). There are 3 bands of metal making up the 'C'-shaped clutch helper spring and two of them worked their way up from the outer metal band. They were contacting and rubbing the gearbox housing and causing the sticking clutch pedal feel. I used channelocks to coax them back in place and two tie wraps to keep them there. I just made sure that the tie wraps didn't rub on anything during clutch use. Hope this is your problem and not something ex$pen$ive!
Cheers,
(used a Pelican picture of the clutch helper spring)

Thanks rocket for the pic! you musta taken that when your car was new

Yes I'm going to ask this question

Does anyone have a link to a DIY titled:
"How to change your tranny oil for dummies" ??

Getting the Bentley and Waynes book, but not before I change the oil.

I wish it was always that clean...

Changing the trans fluid is easy. Pull the side plug first (you would hate to drain the fluid only to find out you can't get the side plug out!). Drain the fluid from the bottom. Clean both plugs with brake cleaner to get all the debris off them. Reinstall the bottom plug. You can either use a pump or a length of hose to connect the trans fluid to the side fill plug. The pump is faster and can be had at any parts place cheap.

The bottom plug is a 17mm allen hex and the side plug is a 17 or 19 mm hex head. Don't go beserk tightenng them back up.

Also helps to have the tranny fliud warmed up a bit so it flows easier. I leave it in the boiler room overnight. Some people put it in a 5 gal bucket of warm water for a while.

Well last weekend I changed trany fluid with Swepco 201 as part of the total fluid replacement
on my new (to me) 930 in my continuing effort to remove the crunchy clutch pedal syndrome.

End result after a 2-hour drive, no improvement

I have a new clutch cable and D-Shaped clutch assist spring on my workbench.

This weekend I will first replace just the cable to see if it removes the crunchy clutch pedal syndrome,
if not will then replace the D-Spring and inform the new 930 owners here of my results.

make sure you put the new helper spring in correctly, i have done it several times on my carrera but the last time on my turbo i had it backwards. it's one thing to look at the pics and go ok it goes this way but when you are on your back under the car it's easy to get mixed up.
