Default K27-72OO V 3LDZ

Hi all

Is there much difference between these two turbo's and is it much hassle to fit the 7200. Any performance gain or just a more usable spread of power.

Scott - I made that very change and I did notice a difference. For my 930, the bottom to mid boost was the same but it came on harder on top and didnt run out of breath as soon. My intake ports are bigger than stock so that may have some effect on it as far as the lower to mid range boost. I believe its supposed to come on full boost a little sooner than mine does. Below the 3K rpm range.

As far as the fitting, it was a breeze for mine but that may not be so true for the 3.3 motors. Mine is a 3.0 liter (77 930).

Chet,
Thanks for that. I can get a good used one that's done about 40k easy miles for US$450. Is this a reasonable price?

The price is good, you just have to make sure its in good enough shape to give you some good service time for the money. Stephan or Kevin can give you much better advice than I can on that part. BTW, I like the pic of your car...looks familiar!

The K27 is 965 oem fit and is pretty much the industry standard upgrade for the 930 engine, good for engine upgrades up to 400hp. The easiest way to fit this unit to a stock 930 is to epoxy on an adapter to the compressor outlet pipe that has provision for an o-ring to mate to your original turbo feed pipe, here's the one on our website but many companies sell a similar item:
http://www.porschetuning.co.uk/html/...1&parentid=203

You will need to trim the tinware a little as the intake is in a fractionally different position but other than this it is a direct fit. The price is very good, I would not have second thoughts about buying it provided that it is in good shape.

I bought a brand new K27HFS from stephen of IA.
Buying used could be false economy. It may have internal damage that you cannot see with your eye which will increase lag and cause it to be out of balance. It really depends on your budget.

As for fit, you'll also need to modify the turbo support bracket that attaches to the exhaust side of the turbo and bolts to the engine hanger consol. It fits in between the turbo and the muffler. Lot's of discussion on this. Some leave this bracket off...I think it's a bad idea as the stress of supporting the turbo with the headers/exhaust alone, can weaken the pipes.

A good thread about the bracket. Note that this guy was attempting to fit it to a 3.0L Turbo, but the bracket issues are still the same:

FWIW, I just slotted the two lower holes on the portion of the bracket that attach to the engine consol...worked like a charm...no cutting or welding.

If you use the adapters we make you will not need to epoxy anything. The units are Oringed in the neck and the outside so it can be removed when it is needed. My fear is epoxy can not hold up with the continued heat and will break off, cause a leak or if not applied right shoot up into the intercooler and so on.

I mean no disrespect to Colin, but I advise against this,.

As far as performance. The K27 7200 when I tested years ago offered 35 more HP which is a given, but reduced spool times from 2-6K rpm by a second and a half!! That is huge. As far as buying a used turbo. I think this is always a bad idea unless you are going to have it gone through. You never know what you are getting, then it sits, gets shipped and you will have no life out of it or a shortened life, loss labor and so on

A funny story: I fought like a m_ther f_cker with that god-forsaken-cursed-evil-black-magic-mojo bracket! No amount of karate yells or cursing or beating it with a hammer would help! Everyone assured me this K27 was a "bolt on" mod! I just couldn't get it! I was new to these engines and was reluctant to start cutting and drilling things. So the first time I did one of these, I just left it off! Then a search revealed that this bracket does indeed need to be modified! So me without a welder and hating to take anything to a shop just figured that the hole slotting would work...and it did!

If you have headers and the proper muffler straps on the muffler you do not need the bracket. Think the factory pipe doesn't crack with the bracket, it does. The cross over pipe hangs to far out there. The headers do not and the support from the mufffler is enough. My 930 has not had one for 6 years and still is fine. My other 930s never had them either(with headers) and all the cars were used as daily drivers (15K miles a year).

As Stephen just indicated, leaving the bracket off in 9 out of 10 times won't cause any harm...however, I was born with the mark of the beast on my scalp and I'm sure that I'd be the chosen one for a header crack! I'll try to post a picture tonight for you of mine.

I should also point out that I don't have a muffler...just a small straight pipe. Granted it weighs very little, but again, because I have no muffler, I have no muffler support straps that would/could help carry the weight of the turbo.
