Default Do I have a bad WUR??????????

car is hard to start, once started will not idle until it is warm. car coughs and sputters and billows smoke (whiteish and dark brown/black)

once warm it seems to run fine but will sometimes cut out under hard acceleration

are these symptoms common with a WUR failure.

I changed the plugs and fuel filter last night but it did not make much of a difference. the car did start a little easier, but not easily.

Sounds like a WUR, but without checking the cold and warm pressures with CIS gauges, it's hard to tell for sure. If you buy a stock WUR, be sure and buy a new one not rebuild. Somebody's making an adjustable one if you're into tinkering.

What year is your car? Also, a faulty cold start valve could cause probelms. You really need the CIS pressure gauges to determine the WUR health. Here's a thread that I started about my issues with the WUR. I've also documented where I got my gauge set. So far, I have used the gauges on numerous occaisions...so it was money well spent.

Don't buy a new WUR...there are places that can offer a rebuild. The Brian Leaske (FLYN930) WUR would be the best option and it would be completely adjustable!

Put a meter across the electrical terminals, if you get a resistance then your WUR can be rebuilt. If there is no resistance then it is junk, a new or secondhand one will have to be replace it.

sandman

the car is a 1986.

i also have one other question. the car has been desmogged by a previous owner and it apperars that the o2 sensor is unplugged. this is a wire that leaves the left rear of the car and goes directly to the exhaust. should this be unplugged if the car has been desmogged?

thanks,

Leslie

It is pretty normal to find the O2 sensor disconnected. I believe it's part of the original Lambda system that helped maintane a constant CO level. Most disconnect this and just set the CO to a certain level and call it a day. A real pro like Stephen from Imagine Auto could explain much better than me.

If you buy a rebuild and have the same problem, don't assume it's not still the WUR.

but I'd send a PM to Flyn930 (Brian Leask) first.

I still you think you ought to do some more digging. There are lot's of things that go wrong with CIS. It could be the WUR - it might be something else...I'd have it checked before sinking some bucks into it.
