Well said. I just got so bored of mundane, "vanilla", transportation and yearned to begin driving an older car again (as I had to in high-school and college). For me it's an escape from the stresses of life, in general. People really don't get why I'd ever consider driving this hot, loud, oil leaking (although the new engine has been dry), old beast of a car until they actually climb behind the wheel and grab that thick steering wheel...then it starts to make sense!

I let my buddy have a go in it the other day (it was his first time driving a Porsche). He couldn't believe how good the outward visibility is..."I can nearly see the crest on the hood", he said. He loved the dash layout and the seating position. Then as he drove, he said that he didn't undertsand all of the myths about the car being a handful to control. "Isn't this a Turbo?" he asked. I told him stop driving as if he had a car load of groceries and kids and step on it!!! He was completely shocked! He just couldn't comprehend the "Jeckyl and Hyde" personality that these cars posses. The sound of the open "zork" and the turbo whistle is what he loved the most. We took a forty-five mile trip on the interstate and he just couldn't get over how well it drove and how solid the ride was/is.

In the end, HE GOT IT!

 

Yes he has! But if you knew the guy like I do you'd understand. (We've known each other for over a decade.) When, dare I say "if", this thing finally hits the street it will be brutally fast and way over-engineered. The interesting thing to me is whether or not he'll drive it for 4 years or if he ends up selling it or taking it apart again!

I guess for some it is more about the journey than the destination... we'll see, won't we, Shifter!

 

46. Lost track of how many I owned. Have owned several turbos, a couple of twin turbos and a bunch of Carerras and SC's. My first Porsche I bought at 19 years old was a 74 911 with a 2.8 RS motor. Wish I never sold that car.......

 

I am 30, and "inherteted" the 930 from my father 12 years ago. He bought the car new (well from an importer) in 84. He lost interest in sports cars and gave it to me @ 18.

 

Bought my first Porsche at 22, a '79 924. Sold it a few years later, sadly.

Bought my second one a month ago, at 45, the '89 930.

What I don't get is that 23 years have gone by between those two purchases, but the second car's only 10 years newer... How'd THAT happen?

32. But I bought my 930 end of last Oct. So I was 31. Never did manage the Porsche before I'm 30 thing........! Still amazed at the amount of knowledge on this forum. Hats off.

 

41. I have owned my 930 for 3 years as of this month. Bought a 993 C4S last year and sold it this summer. Just not as much fun as the 930. The passion started with BMWs when I was in my mid 20's.

 

Wow...glad I started this thread...alot of members who normally do not post are coming out of the woodwork...COOL!

I'm going to get my calculator and figure out avg. age..for curiousity sake.

I'm 37. This is my third 911 turbo. Bought my first 930 at 28. I keep buying other sports cars and they may be faster, newer, ....but they just don't bring grins like the 930.
For me the 930 is the perfect combination of: beautiful but not bling, trackable but still streetable, classic but not yet ancient.

 

I think that WERK-I, Rudy911, OLLI, Fairman, Stratman, Trinana, others and myself should start our own Seniors 930 Forum. After all, if we can 'request' a new Turbo section on Pelican... why not use the same approach on Rennlist...
This way we can produce threads like... complain to each other about how our arthritis effects our shifting ability, or why we can read the damn gauges because the numbers are too small, or the times we blacked out from the insane G-forces of the recent mods....

I'm 38 and have been going through the sports cars that I dreamed about growing up reading all the magazines in the 70's-90's. Porsche Carrera, a few 928's, Ferrari 512bb, 308GTS and 308 GT4, Detomaso Pantera, a couple of NSX's and currently a slightly enhanced 930. After 1 year I still have no intention to sell, which is a first for me. I still love the look, the crudeness and the power, yet somewhat reliable. I have had some fun cars, but they all had a deficiency. So far, the 930 covers all of my interests.

 

Just turned 60 and have owned the Beast for 3years. I am keeping it until I can no longer read the boost gauge(which is where the clock was)
