I mounted the CDI in the stock location and before anyone asks, I'm not worried about it getting too hot.

I've got the back of the car almost complete, I just have to install the half shafts and the intercooler. Up front, I need to wire up the fuel pumps and power to the ECU.

Then I just have to take a stab at programing the ECU to get it to run.

wohoo! Go David Go!

I think this is one of the most anticipated efi conversions of 2005.....I mean 2006!

You've done a beautiful and methodical job on it, I'm sure it's going to be worth the effort and time. I mean how many guys can say they twin-plugged their heads themselves, much less all the other top-notch fabrication work.

Since there may be one or two people curious about the latest:

I tried to upload a program to the M600 on Monday (after sitting in a neighbor's driveway for an hour waiting for the water to go down so could drive the last 3 blocks to my house which was high and dry). It said the firmware needed to be upgraded so I clicked OK. It started loading the new firmware to the ECU then it aborted about halfway through. I tried again but the laptop wouldn't connect with the ECU.

I tried again the next night and it still wouldn't connect. Since it was late I called Australia and trouble shot it with them for a while. He concluded it was the CAN cable. The next day I went to my tuner and checked the cable, it was fine. Checked my laptop with the cable, fine. Check the ECU with his laptop and it wouldn't connect either so the (edit) ECU went back to Motec. No word yet on what's up.

Hi David, I have only seen this occur if the CAN communications is interrupted or power is interrupted during an update. What happens is that the Laptop unloads the fimrware and then uploads new firmware so if it is interrupted in the middle it may cause the ECU to lock up and require it to be sent back to MoTeC where they can fix the firmware.

The tech in Australia asked if the laptop had lost power during the upload, but it was plugged into AC power and I didn't see any problems there. Hopefully I'll get it back next week and give it another go.

At least I've been able to work on the kitchen this weekend so the wife is happy.

That really blows the time lost is not a good thing. Why isn't there a field repair for this.

I got the ECU back and tried starting it last night. I got it to run for a few seconds, but it's definitely not running yet.

I got an injector peak error, so peak current was not being reached. I need to find out what's the correct current for my Siemens injectors. I also need to lower the fuel pressure so the injectors can be open longer.

The TPS isn't reading right, I may have it wired wrong.

I got a ref/sync not synchronized error. I used the ref/sync capture utility and everything looked good. I tried changing whether the sensors are rise or fall to see if that would help put a little more spread between signals. That helped it start better but they still didn't synchronize.

Then after adjusting the fuel and ignition a few times, I got a no sync signal error. I used the ref/sync capture utility again and there was a sync signal but it's not consistent I don't know what to do on this one except pull the engine and check the sync sensor on the cam.

The good news is there were no oil spots under the engine this morning and there were only two fuel leaks last night which were just loose connections.

Ah...now you guys see what I deal with all the time and why doing an EFI conversion yourself is not a slamn dunk.

David,

DO you have access to a scope to check the sync errors? This is th eonly way to do this.

I can borrow a scope from work. What would the scope tell me that the Motec ref/sync capture utility won't?

There's oil in the engine and fuel in the tank.

I fixed the TPS, it was wired wrong.
Fixed the injector peak error, they are high impedence injectors (Mototron 006) so I set the injector current to 0 amps.

Now the engine starts but runs rough and idles low so I've still got a little ways to go. The sync error went away when it was able run for more than 10 seconds. At least I feel like I'm on the right track now.

SHE'S RUNNING!!!!!!

The rough running was the timing, doh!!

I'm doing the cam breakin as I'm writing this, since I've got nothing else to do.

I left the drive shafts off for good luck (so I wouldn't have to pull the engine). Now that's it's running, I'll put them on and get a few miles on it before the dyno tuning.
