How much $ to have RUF build my Yellowbird?
All, been thinking. I want something special. Searched the archives, and find nothing on this. Wondering, if I donated the right car, anyone have a rough idea what it would cost to have RUF (not a local wrench) build a replica of their famed, late-80s Yellowbird?
Steve Millen really liked it when he drove the original recently. I spent twenty minutes in and around it two weeks ago, and ya know, I still dig that car after all these years. The donor car is black, so I guess I'd call it the Blackbird? So whatcha think, with the exchange rate: $75K? $100? $150K?
I will be calling them to ask, but I'd like opinion from ya'll ... a waste of my money? All opinions welcome.

I would say anything between 75-100k. However with that money I would also give Todd at Protomotive a ring to see what he can offer. Also remember you dont get much back for what we put in so make sure you really think abt is. If your going to keep the car, hell yeah go for it!

You could save some transportation costs by having it done here in the states.

It would be a real fantasy trip to have it done at Pfaffenhausen and then take the trip around the ring as the ultimate test drive.
Since most of the value we place in our cars is emotional based I would be tempted to spend the extra money and do the Euro Trip. The car won't be an faster but it's a great story to share.

Yes the yellowbird would be slower than some Protomotive setups but I'd go for the yellowbird and with that kind of money make sure they convert it for you to an original yellowbird on paper. I'm sure it can be done.

Precisely ... see, I figured if it was a true RUF-built recreation of the original, with a slight twist, it'd have value and notoriety above that of a tuner-built clone. Of course, if it costs too much to do, there is a point of diminishing returns. I'll find out soon.
PS: crap, I just thought of something ... I live in California, so I wonder how dumbed-down it'd have to be, power-wise, to make CARB happy. That's the big question.

How much slower could a YB be? How many tuner companies have built 215mph 911's(not that 9ff 996 250mph thing)? I thought the YB did a mid to high 11s 1/4 with very little traction? I'd take a genuine Ruf over ANY tuner car companies attempt. That is, of course, if money is no object but since it is, I'd probably pass on the Ruf.

Yes the YB has the juice -- albeit in an "old school" way as Steve Millen put it recently. My problem is though, that stepped out of fantasy and into reality: I live in California, and I'm guessing there is no way to duplicate that type of performance or get it past the CARB *****. So, it'd end up being a compromise of some sort. Maybe that's a story in itself, I dunno. I'm still going to inquire though.

Here's what you do...get a 993 TT engine and stick it in an early car w/a 993 M030 6-speed w/LSD. You want Ruf to get involved, he can do the R conversion on it. About $30k...just for that.
I'm doing this but w/o Ruf..having Kevin's Stage 1s. Should be a crazy quick street car w/serious stealth action here. Plus ice cold a/c!

LA964RS,
Why buy a 993tt engine when your current block is good enough for a lot of power? Would'nt you save a lot more money rather than paying that extra for a stock 993tt block?

Sell your motor. the 993tt is a fantastic starting point. All the plumbing is there all the turbos are there...more years of development are there...and wonderful upgrade packages are there and more cc's are there. It would be a more cost effective and stock its 400 hp.

Well, here's the critical question for my checkbook: what would an authentic, 1987, US emissions spec, RUF "Blackbird" go for with about, say, 20,000 miles on it (being a MFG, this car would have an MSO so they reset the ODO, right?). That's the question. If I spend $100K + original car, would I get it back?
