Jim,
The K29 the biggest piece of crap? Are you sure?
I have the K29 and I get full boost of 0.9 bar between 3300-3400revs and it holds the boost all the way to redline. Yes there are better turbos out there like the Garrets or K27 highflows but ask me if the K26 3ldz is crap and I might just say yes but the K29 being crap? No way.

Sameer, The k29 compressor wheel is an old inefficient design.

Goeffrey,
Yes it's older technology but still I get full boost not too late and I can live with that.

Its excellent if you have it on the car, don't mess with it.
I am simply saying that if you have your turbo out, it is a good idea to come into the second millenium.
The difference in 30 years of turbo tech is SIGNIFICANT - it is not just a technicality.
Modern Garret turbo spool MUCH faster AND make MUCH more power.

Some venders who sell older styles will tell you that there is vacuum issues, oiling problems etc - but these are guys who have motives different from the best performance from YOUR car.

The Porsche high oil pressure issues have been overcome for quite some time now - choose your turbocharger vendor carefully.

ala the invention of the K27 Hyflow series of turbochargers.. And the new Hyflow 2 which is 2005 compressor wheel technology.

Why would anyone bolt on a Garrett when you have high efficiency KKK hybrids.

Jim is correct when he states that the K29 compressor wheel is crap when compared to modern designs. However, he is short-sighted that KKK hasn't moved forward with better and newer designs since the 3LDZ or K29.. Borg Warner purchased KKK, that brought alot of engineering to the table, and newer more efficient designs.

Making the statement that Modern Garret turbo spool MUCH faster AND make MUCH more power. Is just a statement of opinion, not fact.. There are other turbocharger manufactures that have very up to date technology. And even with Garrett components it is a mix and match.

No, no - I am not including the newer triple K's in my statements - I excluded them in an earlier post.

Guys,
Yes I know JIm is correct and I agree with you'll that there are more modern better turbos like the highflow and even maybe some Garrets BUT what I was saying is that if I can get full boost in the low 3000revs and flow enough air to full boost to redline for a CIS engine, should the K29 be called crappy? Yes it's not the best but it's not crappy either. The 3ldz IMO is crappy.

Sameer it is all about the efficiency and the heat generated to get the boost and airflow that your engine requires. Right now there are smaller compressor wheels that will output more air than the "flying brick" K29 wheel with less heat. That means that your intercooler doesn't have to be a full bay unit, or it means that you can run higher boost levels and generate less heat.

Yes, it may work, but at what cost..
