Default Centerlock Wheels

Amongst other things, it has always been my dream to own a P-car that had REAL centerlock wheels: i.e. one large nut holding the wheel on. I had a set of centerlock "Mini-Lites" on my 1969 MG-B-GT and they were great, but that car already had wire wheels with the spinner knock-offs, so it was an easy addition.

What's involved here? Is there an adapter that has a large splined hub (center section) that can be bolted on to the existing five lug? Look at these pics:

Try Geoffrey at Racetek Engeneering. I think he may have just done this, but I'm not sure what car.

Check page two of the Racing forum, it was just asked about a week or two ago for a 993. Not sure how compatible the parts are though for a 993.

If you look in that second picture, it looks as though that splined component just bolts right up, like a spacer or adapter. I wonder if I got the wheels, if I could have that part custom machined...provided it wasn't available???

It is true that I converted my new car to centerlock attachement. However, the car was a C2 and the parts MUCH more available. In fact, I was able to machine the factory hubs rather than purchase the PMNA parts.

For the older cars, you'd need to find the 935 centerlocking hubs. I saw a set on eBay recently from a guy out west but we are talking thousands of dollars here, and you never know what you are getting from "old" race parts. They may or may not still be good. I think the whole centerlock setup for the C2 cost me $1000.

Thanks, Geoffrey...I was afraid that you might make mention of 935 parts!!!!! I don't even want to think about that road yet. I was just curious. I don't mind spending some bucks on new parts, but not sure about that old stuff! I wouldn't do the conversion until I had completed a few engine mods: Tial, K27HFS, etc. I just wanted to get my hands around what was involved.

You can always go for the faux look. Fools most people.

I know. I have them.

FVD has the parts. Fits some BBS. Maybe others.

As much as I love 'em Center Lock just be careful guys... it really isn't designed to work on the street. One reason BBS stopped selling those kinds of wheels to most of us folks is they just didn't want the liability associated with people driving center lock wheels on street cars on the street It really isn't as safe....

Sharky,
Is'nt that safe? If they could use it for race, is'nt that itself justifialbe to drive it on the streets? Did I miss something here?

It isn't that centerlocking wheels aren't safe, they just require maintenance and checking that you probably wouldn't do on a street driven vehicle.

Geoffry is right - its just that maint. is required and you have to be more aware of your vehicle and its bits.

I have centerlocks on mine that are 935 parts, they run about $2,000 for unrestored old parts, about $4k for new ones from Zuffenhaus which I'm getting outfitted on mine.

There are a few of us running them on the 930s with the 934 or 935 setup - but you'll have to modify your struts to accept the hubs and get custom hats to fit the rotors.

Call Zuffenhaus.us and they'll be happy to tell you about them - i'm not endorsing them, just a really satisfied customer.

But sadly they'll never look this good, no school like the old school. 427 ft/lbs of torque and a 6' breaker bar just to get 'em off...when cars had flames and drivers had *****:

Zuffenhaus Racing has the "old school" centerlocks for sale. They look GREAT! Bob Aines is a regular on the Early 911 Board and is one of the owners. I think our own Steve Weiner (Rennsport Systems in Portland) may have a few as well.
