Default Selling my car, need advise

Hi friends,

I really need your advise on this one. I will be planning on selling my car in the near future, maybe end this year and would prefer to export it out to a country which takes in right hand drives. Now I have thrown in US$80k just in mods and restoration excluding the car price itself and have the receipts to back it up. All works were performed by Ruf Automobiles Singapore and the car is in immaculate condition.

What kind of market value would my 1980 911 Ruf BTR (Conversion) fetch?
How do I go about exporting the car?
Where or which website can I post pictures and asking price for my car?

Pls do let me know of anything I missed out as I'm not too sure of how to go about doing this. Thanks guys.

You'll could e-mail me if you'll like too at sameer@pacific.net.sg

Hi Sameer,

Here in South Africa we have right hand cars. In actual fact, we are only allowed to import right hand drive cars due to recent legislation. Unfortunately, and to the best of my knowledge, if we import used cars we can not register them. This means that they can not be driven on our roads "legally" and can only be used for track purposes. It is a stupid rule and is part of our Government's idiotic protectionist policies as we manufacture vehicles locally. If however one wanted to import a brand new vehicle or parts (new and used)this can be done and the vehicles can be registered and driven on the roads. Doesn't make any sense at all I know.

If you would still like to advertise your car in SA, then let me know and I will provide you with a few local contact numbers on the advertising side.

Cheers
mo

PS Why are you selling. It sure is a beut and you have spent quiet a bit of time and effort into it ... and isn't there still the EFI mod to do?

Sameer, why are you contemplating selling? You car is gorgeous! Is it the HP bug that has you interested in another? The 930's are the best looking by far! Especially the RUF! Not many compare....

I agree with SoFast! Why the interest in selling, Sameer? I've been lurking on the 930 forum for many months now, and Sameer has been a MAJOR contributor! You seem very much addicted to your car and this model! And as for SoFast's HP comment, I hope that's not it! I know "you can never have enough...blah, blah, yada, yada...", but let's be realistic here, a top-fuel dragster can't be very much fun to drive around town...well maybe at first it would be! HA!

Dude - Man...sorry to hear that you are considering selling your car. I know the feeling, and I am not going to even try and persuade you not too, you have to do what you have to do - I respect that, we all have reasons to move. But regardless sorry to see you go, even though I have only been on here a few weeks now.

Your car is still my wallpaper on my home PC!

In regards to shipping \ exporting the car overseas, I would recommend picking up Thoroughbred and Classic Car magazine, Practical Classic Car magazine and those types of British \ UK based magazines - I know they are available in Singapore at any decent Magazine Shop. The reason being that there will be many Porsche Specialists listed in the back of the magazine and who also advertise and they would be willing to import your car plus they have the shipping connections too. Europe will be a hot bed for your car, so that could potentially be a very viable market. And in Europe they don't care RHD \ LHD they drive them all the same!

Also try calling up some shipping exporters on how much it would cost to ship the car to target type markets for example:
Japan
Australia
USA
Canada
and then list the car on eBay and ensure that you say that the car is in Singapore and it will cost $XXX to import the car. This way it gives the potential buyer an idea on shipping related costs. RHD cars 25years and older can be registered in the U.S and Canada. eBay will give you the widest International audience, but you need to take the time to write-up a good description with lots of pics and lots of relevant info to assist a potential buyer who might be potentially be located half around the globe.

There are alot of wealthy people in this world, so your car will find a home.

To give you an idea, Japanese sellers list RHD Skylines on eBay all the time and many have legally made it to the U.S and have been registered too.

Hope that helps and sorry to see you go.

If I may speculate a bit, we all throw some serious money at our cars to make them special in some way, or the other, we try and eke all the possible horsepower out of our engines but at the end of the day all we have, dare I say, is an old car, albeit beautiful and special in their own way but still an old car. Our cars are appreciated by just an insane niche group that are hopelessly dedicated to these cars. I have spent inumerous gobs of cash building cars only to later sell them to chase the next dream for 20 cents on the dollar. Unlike most of you I do not have the skill or the time to wrench on my car myself so mods are also labor costly. The bottom line is despite the beauty of Sameer's RUF he may be seeking the next thrill as he may already realize that while you can tune these cars ad infinitum at what opportunity cost, for the money Sameer spent he could have had a stock 930, and with the 80k in mods a clean 993tt. Though as I am sure most on this forum will argue that the joyis in the journey not the destination.
I pulled up to mall the other day and some butthead comes up in a 993 Carrera 4 and says to me "is that Alex's car," as I only purchased the car two months ago from an avid Porschephile in Reno I was puzzled and this clown was like Alex Ruf then I responded "oh my car is not a Ruf but the original owner sought to clone a Ruf" then he was like good for you and acted like I pulled up in some hopped up Mustang or something as if he was better than me with his 993 turbo tail he would surely not have scoffed if I laid all 400+ German thoroughbreds to the ground and left him in the dust but my 2 year old and I were just out to have some ice cream. My point is that the masses do not respect these car for what they are.
Good Luck Sameer, next time buy a car with completed mods that are to your taste, trust me they are out there and you will save a bundle.

Guys,
I really do appreciate all your replies and opinions. slownrusty, thanks for having it as your wallpaper. That means a lot to me.

The reason I will sell it if I get a good offer is because I'm looking at the 993tt which I will convert to the CTR2 Sport specs and looks. However I still do love my car and I know it has a lot of improvement for horsepower so again if the offer comes than a sad bye bye to it but if I dont get a buyer, I'll just keep her and enjoy her.

Mo,
Will you be able to provide me with some e-mail address?

Sameer, I want to see an example of the car you want to build? Just curious what has you in a buzz. DO you have any photos?

Its an incredible car. Too bad you are going to part with it. The good side of big time mods is when you go car shopping you can usually pick up a great deal. I guess the downside is for the seller you only seem to get 10 cents on the dollar for them come sell time.

That said you seem to have a car thats unique in several ways and I think that would command an unknown premium on top of the car itself and the mods. The money youve put into it has been a total labor of love no doubt. Someone is going to get a great deal probably. If they started from scratch like you and did it themselves it would cost an arm and a leg too.

Maybe Geoffrey has a good idea as to value since he has thrown some large jing into his.

Now back to my widdy biddy 300 horses.

Sameer,
you can export the car to Australia. As it is over 15 years old it will not incur a high level of import duty. Swan Porsche in Perth import cars from Japan. Yours may be a bit pricey for them but they may be able to help with some info. www.swanporsche.com.au

goldminer,
Thanks.
Again guys, if I dont get my price, I will keep the car. I'm in no rush at all to sell it or I might just keep it for good. It all depends on the price.

Sameer,

The widest and most general audience for the SA used car market is www.autotrader.co.za. they have a sports car section where most of the Porsches are advertised (Our local Porsche Centre and independant Porsche Tuners also advertises here). You could also visit the porscheclubsa.co.za and contact our central region directly.

If you send me a mail on your specs, pics, asking price etc. I will e-mail to the guys in the Kwazulu-Natal Club and try and get the other clubs to post as well. Once again, I must warn you that as used imported cars can not be registered in SA there isn't a market for them other than out and out track cars.
Cheers
Mo
