Default Brakes??

Hi friends,

I need your advise for a friend of mine who does'nt post here at all.

He drives a 89 930 turbo totally stock with Fuch rims. However he wants to upgrade his brakes and was wondering if he could add on the 993 carrera brakes(black calipers) or the 993tt(big reds) brakes on while retaining his stock Fuch rims. What would be needed? Any adapters? Pleas advise my friends. Thanks.

I could be (and probably am) mistaken but I've heard that you need 17" wheels to go with the Big Reds.

The stock 993 calipers are not Big Reds. They are actually the s4 calipers. The s4's are black, not red as discribed. They have the same piston size, but the pad size is smaller and the big reds are clearanced for a larger rotor.

One would need adaptors and different brake lines. I have several sets of these (as well as a nice set of s4 calipers powdercoated red). I can send out pictures if anyone is interested.

These will fit on a 16" rim. They are not much taller than the stock setup since you are using the stock rotor. If you went with the 993 turbo sized rotors, then there would be a concern over wheel clearance.

Thanks

The big reds will fit under certain 16" wheels such as lightweight BBS Racing wheels, but will not fit under Fuchs and most other 16" wheels.

Ok guys,
Forget the big reds as he wants to retain his Fuch. So the 993 black calipers will fit into the Fuchs? What parts would be needed? How about the rotor? Can we fit bigger rotors?

He would need adaptors and different brake lines. I do have these to sell that will work with the stock rotors.

The stock rotors will work great and with these calipers and adaptors will fit the 16" wheels.

Thanks

Does he want to upgrade brakes for looks or performance? Personally, I've found that the stock brakes are totally adequate when coupled with proper cooling, even on the track. This is with a car the produces double the stock HP. I moved to big reds because I was wearing out stock pads so quickly and got tired of changing them.

Sameer:

If I may add something here,....

Installing bigger calipers (S-4's) on the stock 304mm rotors is not the best way to improve braking. All this will do is faciliate premature rotor cracking and wear from the increased heat.

There are 2 new brake kits from Brembo called the GTP and GTP-L Brakes. These use 322mm high-annulus rotors and the GTP-L's will fit inside the 16" Fuchs wheels.

I've put the specs at http://www.rennsportsystems.com/1-f.html

I'll have pics up pretty quickly as they are all here and I just need some time to shoot them,....

Sameer,
I know you didn't ask for an opinion on whether he should do this, but there is practically no way a stock 930 could use larger brakes (especially with street tires). The 930 brakes are just awesome. I had a track 930 with about 450hp and the stock brakes were totally fine with pagid pads and decent cooling. Keep in mind that (particularly with street tires) the limiting factor in braking capacity is tire/road friction, so larger brakes don't do anything "better."

I have to agree 100% with you DC... the stock brakes go a LONG way. I know I've worked the stock brakes very hard on the track (w/ R tires) and they are pretty damn impressive. No way could he need more on the street. If he just wants to look the part, paint them red and be happy.

Steve,guys,

Thanks a million for your replies. I will let my friend know on what you'll have to say.
Steve I will try and get him to buy parts of you when or if he has decided to go ahead with the upgrade.
