Need help selecting a better oil cooler
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a very original 1982 930 Slant Nose. I have been noticing that when the temperature is in the 80s, and even on very mild drives, the car temp gets right to the second line (it has never crossed the second line-yet). I am also not sure what temperature each line represents.
I live in Denver so we do get some 90 degree days every summer which is making me very nervous. My oil cooler as I understand is the stock original factory unit.
what are your suggestions as far an aftermarket oil cooler?
also any other tips/tricks to keep my temp down?
Thank you and I’m including a picture of my temp gauge from an earlier drive this afternoon.

Thats way too hot for your climate. I would check the fan on the oil cooler. I installed the Patrick Motorsports 200 degree oil fan temperature sending unit. In Miami traffic in the summer i barely go above the first red line. I have an 89 930.
Thanks,
Larry

Fan kit is a great idea. I have two fender coolers with the fans and a thermostat and haven't seen a temp over 195 which is pretty good.
Adding a fan kit to the existing passenger side fender cooler first is a great idea. If you need still more cooling, a driver side fender oil cooler kit can be added on.

We used the Elephant Racing kit which didn't fit perfectly but was pretty good.
You might also consider changing your oil temp gauge and sender to the older style unit so that you can easily read what the temps are.

Thank you so much. Great recommendation!
My only fear is- if there is enough room on my car around the fenders, due to the Slant Nose. I am going to take her to the Porsche air-cool specialty shop here in Denver to measure and see what can get in there. Thanks again.

930 Oil temp
I installed the air scoop in the front bumper side light to bring additional air flow across the front oil cooler. I also have a thermostatically controlled fan on the front oil cooler as well. I was living in Tampa Florida at the time and the combination of both did the trick.
Also - see photo of my gauges. Having a temp gauge in degrees in my opinion is the way to go.

Thank you so much 911X2. I think I am going the same route based on all the great recommendations here.
New oil cooler-radiator style w/ a fan on one side of the fender. After some detailed measurements, looks like I can squeeze one in. If I need more cooling still, I will then go to the other fender and install another set. There's so little airflow to the current factory oil cooler due to the Slant Nose.
Also thank you for the pic of your gauges. Very helpful. Its very alarming that the their line is at 250 degrees! I thought the red area was the start of 250 degrees and up.
I think I am going to stop driving this car completely until the new cooling system is installed.

What brand/type/viscosity motor oil are you running?
For the M505 chassis, the factory relocated the passenger fender-mounted Carrera cooler to the passenger rear wheel well. And if not mistaken, the factory also fitted a center-mounted cooler behind the front valance. How many oil coolers did your car come with, and where were they originally located? What, if anything, have you done to the oiling system since last summer?

If a 1982 and it's not already been upgraded, you likely have the old trombone style cooler. It's not effective if you stop in hot weather. As noted check your fan belt - try to turn the resting engine over using a 24mm socket and wrench on the fan nut (clockwise to the right). If it doesn't turn the crank then the belt is too loose. They can look fine but under load if loose will slip.

Same oil I run in my cars.
Was your chassis built at the factory or was this done after delivery? Your car does not have another cooler in front of the passenger rear wheel, fed cooling air from the ducted intake? That is where the factory relocated the Carrera coolers for US '87-'89 M505 optioned cars. Fitting the factory solution would probably go a long way to lowering your engine oil temps.
