Whatever the story is, having your car number #1200 is very very cool

I decided to post a summary of late-79 model details along with the Porsche+Audi press release on the last 50 U.S. ’79 cars.
The June 2012 Excellence Magazine article on the late-79's mentions that updated A/C vents were added along with narrow sport seats. I had always thought the updated sport seats were not available until the mid-1980 (with the round **** tilt mechanism). One other detail I’ve recently noticed is that the very late ’79s were equipped with Nippondenso (vs. York) air conditioner compressors.
Here’s a summary for the U.S. 79 930’s:
“1190" US, '79 models (9309800011 to 9309801200).
*Source: Porsche 911 Turbo 3 and 3.3 litre: Project no. 930, Michael Cotton, Osprey, 1988.
1979 model year (to August 1979) – 806 produced
VINs - 9309800011 to 9309800817
Larger style headlight washers and older style center A/C vents (same as 1978 models)
1980 model year (continue 1979 series) - 384
VINs – 9309800818 to 9309801000
Flush headlight washers
Updated center A/C vents
85 mph speedometer (mandated by Sep 79, U.S. Federal Law)
VINS – 9309801000 to 9309801200
Flush headlight washers
Updated center A/C vents
85 mph speedometer (mandated by Sep 79, U.S. Federal Law)
Adjustable headlight bezels (somewhere around VIN 1000+)
Nippondenso air conditioner compressor (somewhere around VIN 1100+)
Once again, not sure about the narrow sport seats mentioned in the Excellence article.
Below is the text from the 1980 press release that was included with the paperwork with my car. It’s interesting that they mention the term “930” in the release (only a U.S. market term) and Porsche’s first entry in the Indianapolis 500-mile Race that never came to be. Also absent is mention of the June 1979 Porsche 935 victory at Le Mans (perhaps since this was not a Porsche-works entered car).
That’s all for now - still waiting to discover more interesting details about the late-79s.

Press Release – Porsche+Audi Public Relations
Porsche Turbo Retires Undefeated
City and State – (dealer) Porsche+Audi, at (address), will be the site of a historic ceremony on (Date) – one of the last 50 Porsche 930 Turbos for the United States will be delivered to (Name), a (Occupation/Description), in the (City) area.
Known as the fastest street-legal car sold in America with a demonstrated top speed of 165 mph, the already legendary model will no longer be available here after the last of the ‘79s arrive from Germany. (Name), General Manager of (Dealer) Porsche+Audi, says that although the high-horsepower “flat-six” engine is capable of meeting current U.S. exhaust emission regulations, modifications to the emission control system and recertification required for the coming model year would be impractical for the limited-production sports car.
Introduced in 1976 as the Turbo Carrera and renamed simply “the Turbo” in 1978, U.S. production of the high-performance luxury Porsche has averaged about 600 cars a year, often with a waiting time of (?) months for delivery of the sought-after model.
Not to be confused with the turbo-charged version of the Porsche 924 which was introduced this past year, the Porsche 930 Turbo is a derivative of the classic 911.
Benefiting from the development of the 1,000-horsepower 917/30 which won Can-Am Championships in the early ‘70s, modified 911-based Turbos have captured the World Manufactures’ Championship, the International Motor Sports Association Road-Racing crown, and the coveted U.S. Trans-Am Championship. This May, the proven turbo-charged six will power Porsche’s first entry in the Indianapolis 500-mile Race.
Porsche engineers have perfected modern automotive turbo-charging, and the “street-Turbo” uses a system which many other manufacturers are now turning to in an effort to create more powerful and flexible small-displacement engines. With fuel economy far-surpassing other “exotics” in its class, the 3.3-litre fuel-injected engine produces 253 horsepower – and 0 to 60 mph times of less than five seconds.
(Dealer) Porsche+Audi will also be presenting Mr./Mrs./Ms. (Name) with a special dash plaque and a certificate signed by Dr. Porsche himself to denote that the car is officially one of the last 50 Porsche 930 Trubos for the United States.

9Eleven,
Your car was originally equipped with the snorkle style headlight washers. These have become "unobtainium" so perhaps they were damaged and someone had the flush mounted headlight washers installed.
Just noticed that VIN 1086 in the June 2012 Excellence Magazine has the Nippondenso air conditioner compressor installed so this change occurred before '79 VIN 1100 and may have occured the same time as the adjustable headlight bezels.

There’s a “letter to the editor” on the “79 Plus” article in the September 2012 issue of Excellence Magazine…“By the way, the last 50 Turbos were supposed to have a dash plaque, but in the end did not. VW of America, the importer, was too scared of litigation, which BMW would find out about with the first M5s, so they killed the idea.”
Its interesting how the last fifty ’79 930’s continue to be shrouded in myth and mystery. Perhaps its because these cars are not well documented compared to the ‘75 silver anniversary 911’s.
Dave mentioned in a previous post that for his 930 (VIN 1200), he was told by Porsche that Volkswagen of America put the dash plaques together. So unlike the ’75 silver anniversary 911’s that were delivered with the dash plaque installed, the U.S. Porsche+Audi dealer that sold one of last-79 930’ probably provided the dash plaque and certificate to the new 930 owner upon delivery. This may help explain why so many dash plaques are missing from these cars (they became separated when the cars were sold again as used cars since they were not affixed to the glove box).
Porsche AG must have been involved with the last-50 U.S. 930’s. After all, Ferry Porsche personally signed fifty of the certificates that were shipped to the U.S. Additionally, production of the last 50 930’s must have been complicated by the fact that Porsche produced the U.S. ‘79’s with two different engines: 930/64 (49-State) and 930/65 (California). It would be interesting to find out how this production breaks out to see if its a 50/50 split between California and 49-State cars.
