Default Advice Needed on 930 Purchase

I am thinking of adding a 1987 930 to the stable (1991 964, 1986 951). I have my eyes set on this beauty and I was curious as to what you guys think. Here is a list of the modifications and a picture.

1987 450hp (has been documented and paperwork will be provided)Porsche 930 Turbo. I was at a local Porsche dyno day and saw the car on the dyno.

Motor work includes: PORTED AND POLISHED HEADS, AASCO VALVE SPRINGS AND TITANIUM RETAINERS, SPECIAL GRIND CAMS, SPECS WILL BE PROVIDED TO NEW OWNER, ARP CONNECTING ROD BOLTS, LARGER PORSCHE INTERCOOLER/ UPGRADED TO A 94 TURBO INTAKE, 1 BAR SPRING, POWERHAUS HEADERS, B&B DUAL EXHAUST 4" PIPES, ANDIAL ENRICHMENT SYSTEM, POWERHAUS INJECTOR BLOCKS, SPECS WILL BE PROVIDED TO NEW OWNER.

Suspension enhancements include: WELTMEISTER TORSION BARS, HOLLOW, THE LARGEST AVAILABLE, 27 FRONT 33 REARS, WELTMEISTER SWAY BARS 21 FRONT 21 REARS, SPORT SHOCKS BEILSTEIN FRONT AND REAR, FIKSE FM 10 WHEELS 8" AND 10" FRONT AND REARS, 245 FRONTS 275 REARS.

Interior options are: SRD RECARO SEATS, 5 POINT HARNESS, STAINLESS HARNESS BAR, MOMO STEERING WHEEL WITH PORSCHE CREST, UPGRADED PORSCHE BECKER CD PLAYER, BOOST GAGE BY POWERHAUS, ANDIAL 10000 RPM TACH.

Exterior modifications are: UPGRADED DOOR MIRRORS, 3.8 RS TAIL WING.

Please let me know if the price $38,000 is reasonable considering the amount of modifications and work that has gone into the car. Thanks in advance.

Ignacio

Ignacio: I don't see how many miles the car has on it (lifetime on the chasis). Also, it would be helpful to know how many miles are on the modified engine.

The car sounds like a fantastic machine. It also sounds like it was built to be driven hard. I strongly suggest you get a PPI done BEFORE you purchase the car - make sure the mechanic does a leak-down test - you'll want to know the condition of the motor, from the inside. (Make sure mechanic has a fantastic reputation for his work on servicing 80's vintage Porsche turbos. If he doesn't, find one who does. This, IMHO, is absolutely critical!

Have the mechanic make a list of things that a) may need repair/service now and b) may need repair/service in the next few thousand miles (what I mean by this is belts, hoses, brake rotors, cam tower seals, other motor/transmission seals, smog pulleys, etc. etc.). You should have an idea of what to expect that is obvious to your mechanic.

Then ask your mechanic if HE thinks $38K is a good price for what you are getting. If your mechanic gives you the thumbs-up on the PPI and the leak-down, then go for it. The price certainly sounds reasonable for all you are getting.

Good luck. Let us know as you proceed!

Dan

I know that the chasis has 86,249 miles on it. As for the miles on the modified engine I have no idea but it is a question I will certainly ask. I have been in the car and it is a beast. I had a grin from ear to ear after the owner took me for a drive. I thought my modified 951 was fast but it felt slow after that drive. I don't think the owner drives it hard but I could be wrong. I know he does use it for DE's but how often I have no idea. That is something else I can ask. Thank you for your response. Hopefully you won't mind if I ask more 930 newbie questions.

Think that might be a bit optimistic. Ask for dyno sheets, if you really care. 450 to the wheels is over 515 to the crank, and that's about 30-70 hp enthusiastic for a CIS system, Andial enrichment or not.

I'm in the Seattle area as well. Ther are several good wrenches here to do a good PPI. I wouldn't worry much about the chassis (barring accidents), but I would be very, very careful with the engine--that's where a good mechanic would earn his money with a PPI.

I work with Chris Powell of Chris' German Auto in Bellevue. I've heard good things about John Walker in Seattle, Squires in Kirkland, etc.

Bruce: Thanks for the information on where to get a PPI done in the Seattle area. I was thinking of Fordhal or Speedware for a PPI but still hadn't decided. I have heard of Chris' German Auto and it is good to know that they would do a good job. I assume they know the 930 very well. Thanks for your input. Even 450 at the crank is good enough for me. I have been taken for a drive and I must say that the car is a beast.

Ignacio, the car sounds well set-up. If these are modifications you might do yourself inevitably and the PPI comes out clean it looks to be a reasonable price. I wasn't aware that there were 27mm front torsions. That would be a bit of a rough ride, 22/23 front would probably be a better. Now if only it had a 5spd

Fordahl is a good guy, but his strength is suspension set-ups. Speedware is also a good shop, but neither are really 930 engine gurus. You're better off at the other places I mentioned for hopped-up 930s. That's what I have, and Chris has been quite good.

That's impressive. What boost pressure to get that number?

That's 450-460 to the crank, which is just about maxed for CIS. If the afr's stay good through the range, that's a good set-up.

Hi Bruce,
max out on CIS, the good thing is that the fuel to air ratio stays rich all the way up to red line, thus impresive flames!!! plus a few other items!
regards
