"Sound Reduction Pad"??? 87 911

The best solution is when your engine is dropped next for major service, buy a new sound pad from your favorite vendor or Porsche dealer and have the tech install it when the motor is out of the car. This produces the best results and returns the factory look.
As you probably know, when you remove that pad, the metal panel underneath the pad is coated with dried adhesive and looks a bit untidy.
Some tech's or DIY guys can work a new pad (or most of it) back behind the engine with the engine still in the car, but it's a bit of work.
I say cut it off where it's separating from the metal and leave the rest until that motor has to get dropped.

Just spend a little time pulling all the bits and pieces out, clean the best you can and as Jay suggested next time you drop the motor give the area a quick detail and install a new one. I personally would think to install a new one with the motor in would be pretty tough and still do a good job.
Good Luck

For what it's worth, when I bought my car it didn't have a sound pad. When I pulled the engine to do the clutch 2 years ago, I installed a new one.
Net change: My car was heavier, my wallet was lighter, and the car sounded the same inside.

I reduced the sound in my car by removing the seats and carpet. After they were removed I lined the floor pans with a sound and heat pad that I pickedup at Home Depot. The product is used on the out side of hot water heaters and is sold by the roll $19.99 for a 4' x 6' roll. It drop road and engine noise by a great deal and reduced out side heat. the whole projected cost me $50 for the pads and contact glue. My next project is lining the inside areas of my doors. Give it a try

When I first bought my car the pad was falling apart, my local generic wrench who was looking the car over for me managed to replace it with the motor installed. when I asked him how he just laughed. now that the car is with my porsche specialist for new head studs and the motor is out[ who knew?] the pad install looks flawless, so I its possible.

I used the same material that Ocala is talking about, under the inside carpet. It helped quite a bit. I bought the material at Pep Boys...its called Thermoshield.
I am now going to do the inside engine compartment...anyone know the exact dimensions, L x W needed?
