Guys - thank you for the various thoughts. I am likely to go the Fabspeed route, and that with a catbypass, and the "Carrera RSR" kit - which has the steve wong chip in it. I will be putting the SSI heat exchangers and Dansk muffler up on eBay when that happens. Will look for the cup airbox as well, thanks SARGEPUG.
My pleasure, hope you enjoy! I also highly recommend the P-short throw, cuts the shifts in half!
If you decide to remove the SSI heat exchangers I might be interested in buying them. That said, they are probably as good or better than any other aftermarket header/heat exchanger for the 911. If you don't like the sound you can easily change the Dansk muffler for a sport muffler, including dual outpipes if you don't mind modifying the rear valence. You can read more about this here:
^ I haven't gone down that road with my Targa because there were plenty of other $$$ things to fix first. Hopefully others will offer their suggestions. I'd like to hear them.
So, GTgears had a useful message, too bad its delivery made it harder to hear.
Like he said, what you have, what Porsche originally designed, is really great for performance. Think about it, it's a set of headers and a muffler, that's all, no extraneous path for the exhaust to travel.
I've got a similar setup on my '87, only my muffler has a second outlet, not sure of its origins (made that way or modified), but it sounds fantastic at full chat. There's an annoying resonance around 2k that I try to drive around, and leaving early/coming home late I worry about the neighbors. But not too much, it's too enjoyable.
That being said, the one thing I've heard about this setup is that the SSI's were made for the older, smaller motors. The real hot setup is to get equivalent heat exchangers (or headers if you don't need heat) with larger diameter pipes. It's too late and I'm to lazy to find a link for you, but they're out there, likely in this very forum…
I certainly would not change that gorgeous exhaust. You could try a Steve Wong Chip.
+1 on the Steve Wong Chip, they are awesome and Steve is a great guy. Fully support his chips and in doing so offer them our 911 kits where applicable.

Not sure how your current system sounds but if it sounds half as good as it looks, I'd leave it as is.

Thanks for the kind words Ed! Glad you are enjoying the system, that setup has always been one of my favorites on the air cooled cars : )
