Default 1980 911 SC speedo swap

I am a new owner of 1980 SC. My first Porsche!! ..question I bought a 1980 911 SC that has the 85 MPH speedo. Car is all original and I want to swap speedo for the 160 MPH. Has anyone done this and what is the best way to accomplish this? Where would I locate a used speedo? I assume document the process for a future buyer, best practice for this? Also does the cable or anything else need swapped? Thank you

Mine was done with one out of a '77. I believe it's just an remove and replace kind of deal. Classifieds here are good as well as pelican.

Try pelican parts or any of the used porsche parts shops, keep the old speedo as someday you'll wish you had it- speedo is a direct swap as long as you get one with same tranny.

I would take pics of both speedos in same pic at time of swap . It will help you and any future owner calculate true milage of car. Also sows honest documentation.

You can get a 150mph speedo from a 82 or 83 model which will be more period accurate, an 84 through 89 can be use as well. These are electronic like yours so it is a plug and play swap. Good luck!

The back electric connections are the same, the only thing is the tach itself like you said.

thanks for confirming . I loaned a gauge to a fellow renlister and he couldn't use it because of the connection, must have been the tach..

I got a 85 Targa and my speedo odemeter needed to be fixed, so while I did the work on it, I got a 85 mile speedo in Hershey just to have something in the dash. Works good, just that if you go over 85 miles, the needle stays maxed out until you slow down! Anyway the connections in the back are the same, no difference. Good luck!
