Default Heat Exchangers

I suspect my 85 Carrera has a leak in one or both heat exchangers. I have a chance to buy a set 3.0 SC exchangers (thick gasket pad) but will these too small for my dead stock 3.2? Obviously would like to save the $$ of not buying new.
What say the Forum? I don't want to ruin a great car!
Cheers, Denny

The SC heat exchangers are different to the 3.2 they won't interchange.

Hi Denny:

First, the SC heat exhangers have much thinner flanges and you'd need to either replace your exhaust studs with SC (shorter) ones or use a lot of washers,......bad deal.

If it were my car, I'd install a pair of SSI's and a good sport muffler like a Monty. Its an excellent upgrade and worth around 15 HP and cooler running.

i would vote for the SSI's but from what i understand VA. is nearly as bad as my dear old california on smog testing. im waiting another couple of years for exemption to go with exaust mods.

if you are at the mercy of smog testing you will need the stock units or daul cats to pass. again i understand it that VA is the only other state as bad as ca.

For all - thanks for the replies - SSI would be great but I need the cat for state emmission inspection.
For Steve at Rennsport - the SC exchangers I saw had the thick flanges; if that is so, would they otherwise work OK?
For Bones - are 3.0s smaller exhaust then the 3.2s?

Denny when you say 'exhaust' do you mean the header (heat exchanger) to back box join or the header to cylinder head join?

Bones - I'm referring to heat exchanger to the head port.

Hey Dennis, if you are interested, I have a set of 3.2 heat exchangers that I removed from my '86 Carrera (backdated to SSI's and yes it is expensive, but also doing an engine rebuild) I do not have the cat to go with it but do have the cross over pipes. If you are interested I would make you a good deal on them. They are in excellent condition.

For Kurt V - yes, I am interested in your exchangers. My home email is: argalldcm@msn.com
For all - thanks for the advice and discussion.
Cheers, Denny
