Hi all, I currently have a 997.1 turbo and have just recently been bitten by the 930 bug. I absolutely love the timeless design. I am completely naive to most things 930 and am still researching but wanted to reach out and know what your thoughts are on this...
I am not looking for a dd as I already have one, this just looks like a ton of fun. Understandably this might be a touchy subject as it's more of a german hot rod than a pure 930 but from a first 930 standpoint, good deal? Or should I find a more pure version and build on that. My ultimate goal is just a fun weekend/very rare autocrosser/classic/classy looking porsche (wife's input).
I'm confused. Are you looking for a 930, but are considering this narrow body, modified '79 SC?
plus, if you want good feedback from RLers, then it is always a good idea to provide as much info about yourself as possible. For example, with this '79 SC you are considering, it would be really good to know if you are a handy DIY guy. I'm thinking you would really want to be knowledgeable around a flat 6 aircooled, have a good garage with plenty of tools.

My apologies, I was under the impression 930 was the body design from the early 70's to 89'. I'm still very much a noob, don't kill me for saying this but I honestly can't tell the esthetic differences from a 79' to an 89' yet. I only know there was an engine upgrade, 3.0 to 3.2 and some suspension. I'm just looking for a fun weekend car/project autocrosser as a hobby. I guess to be more specific I plan on modding moderately and would like something with a good base to start with, or something already built like the one I posted.
As far as DIY I love tinkering and am prepared to do some work. I'm not supremely knowledgeable but I google like a champ and this forum is a gold mine . I installed my exhaust on my 997 and I guess on a handyman scale I'd put myself 7/10 where 10/10 are the guys who can drop an engine.
Bumper cars = 1974 to '89
1974-77 = "middies" sometimes called; have a 2.7 Mg case motor
1978-83 = SC; 3.0L Al case
1984-89 = Carrera; 3.2L case
1984-86 had 915 trans.; later ones had the G50 trans.
Doh! Thank you. Ok so I'm NOT looking for a 930, maybe an SC. What would you recommend for someone who just wanted something with minor issues/decent reliability? I expect to sort out a few but nothing that would require an engine/tranny rebuild.

yes, an SC is the entry point - start reading up on things to look at (rust areas)
OTOH, if you find a '74 in nice condition those used to be overlooked gems as they did not have the thermal reactors that would mess up the Mg cased engine; but did have less rust 'proofing' than the later cars
an SC will be fully rust 'proofed'
the 3.2L motors do have a better engine mgmt. system (EFI vs. CIS in the SC and middies)
yeah I agree, 89 was a split year, the lucky ones got a Carrera, the unlucky ones got a C4. A horrible generic blob of a leaky car with an overly complex AWD system,
