84 911 Carrera 3.2 (Euro)
First off I would like to say hello to all of you. Im new to this forum and don’t own a Porsche 911 yet but I am looking and found one that seems to be a fairly clean. It is a Euro car with about 190,000km on it. Which is about 120,000miles (really close to it)
Just wondering what kind of problems a person would be facing with a car that old with that many miles. Looking over the car and hearing it run was great. The interior is beyond belief (absolutely Pristine) and the engine bay looks like it just rolled out of a showroom. The car ran for about 10-20 min and no leaking of oil, no puff of blue and nothing to indicate any engine trouble other than a rough idle that came about 15min after idling. Im just looking for some ideas on what I should be checking on a car with that many miles.
I already am going to request to have a compression check and leak down test. Just looking for what other tests or abnormal things to check.
Thanks in advance
Nick.

With that milage things can have been renewed more than once, I would check:
1. If and when was the clutch replaced and what parts. They can hold together for a long time if the car is gently driven, but normally you can calculate with 100.000 kms. Don't know the work rates in the US, but I guess a complete clutch replace incl. work is about US$ 1500 (correct me if I'm wrong).
2. If and when was synchros in the gearbox replaced. There are many parts in the gearbox, but generally the synchromesh on 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd can be in various shape. To open up the gearbox takes some time, so a gearbox renovation is a bit more than the clutch, I guess anywhere US$ 1500-2500.
3. If and when was the alternator replaced/renovated. They usually go after 100.000 kms. It's not that expensive to replace though, US$ 300-500?

Some info that i have is that the Gearbox was just rebuilt with the 1st and 2nd dog teeth and syncro's replaced. umm not sure about the clutch being replaced but i can assume that they did... (makes sense???) i saw the repair costs the dealer put about $3000-4000 CDN into the car.

A euro '84 Carrera will have the same potential softspots as all other 911s. Among them are valve guides(no smoke on cold starts or 6k rpm trailing throttle?) rust(check around headlights, tailights, door sills, glass lower edges)synchros(check for smooth shifting, ie no grinding), the car sound like it is either a very clean well cared for example or something that has been recently spiffed for resale. Are there records that corroborate the pristine apearance?

Bill, I am Nicks friend I also looked over the car, it has just had the tranny completely rebuilt new 1-2-3 syncros and the 1st gear dogteeth replaced, the ONLY spec of rust on the car was in the lowest spot of the gas fill area, now 1 thing that should be mentioned is there is evidence of a repaint from the past, not sure that it is hiding everything but it is a VERY clean example 911, also there are NO oil leaks/weeping on the car.

I think I know which car you are talking about. I haven't been out to see it or anything. Looks nice in the pictures, seems a bit cheap tho'.
post up if you find out anything bad, if I manage to sell my current car in the near future I wouldn't mind having a look at that porsche.
Good luck.

The (Euro) 84 carrera has either 231 PS or 207 PS.
The 231 PS has no cat. converter (and, of course, higher compreh.)
I´m not sure, if all cars that went to switzerland must have had a catal.conv. in the early 80`
Again: if it has 231 PS, there is no cat.conv. ! If it has 207 PS, than there is
one
My 84´C1 has 231 PS.....

I believe there is also a Swedish model which uses a 930/26 9.5:1 CR motor which is 98ROZ 231hp rated, without a catalyst but with an air pump for lower emissions. It operates on a special third fuel/ignition map contained within the DME's chip.

"Details:
This is a very clean example of the classic 911. It is equipped with: sunroof, european lights, chin spoiler, power windows, and 16” Porsche Cup wheels with new tires. It has also just had its gearbox overhauled. This 911 is a European specification vehicle which gives it more power than the North American examples, about 230hp in total. Full service history available. "
this is the info about the car that i got... so i would assume that they have done the checks on this car or they wouldnt be stating to me that its not a 230hp model...
