Post Help to identify and explain this part in my engine!

Can anyone tell me (captain ignoramus) what this part is in my 911SC. It looks damaged

Does it need to be replaced?
What purpose does it have?
Easy fix?

If you are talking about the hose it is the air tube going to the heater blower motor at the top of the picture. It provides an airflow from the fan to the blower then to the heater exchangers, lastly to the heat gates and into the car.

Thank you PorschePhD.

So is this a reason that my heat doesn't work that great? Does it have any performace relations? What is the part called if I want to replace it?

If there is any confusion about which part I'm talking about, it's the black kinked plastic hose thingy that has some holes in it.

Mada,

Porsche changed this hose during the 1980 model year. SC's with engines up to:
</font>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">640 1795</font></li>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">630 8249</font></li>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">630 2599</font></li>
  • <font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">630 9039</font></li>
<font size="2" face="Verdana,Tahoma,Arial,Helvetica,Geneva">would use part number 911.211.272.02. For those SC's with engines greater than the numbers above, they would use part 930.211.031.00.

I've seen where people have removed the hose, cleaned the dirt off, and used electrical or other tape to wrap the split areas, in what would be a temporary repair.

The hose needs to be replaced. During normal engine operation some of the engine's cooling air is always diverted through this hose. This is important because this constant airflow keeps the heat from the heat exchangers from rising up through the tube and causing a meltdown. (ask me how I know!)

Make sure that there aren't any air leaks from where it hooks to the engine shroud, goes through the blower, all the way to where it goes down through the engine tin.

Mada,
Try this link - you don't mention what year car you have, which would help in diagnosing and answering questions! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
<a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/por_911M_exhaus_main.htm" target="_blank">http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/por_911M_exhaus_main.htm</a>
Scroll to "heating system" and look for "Blower Hose for ___ style Blower Motor" (insert your model year in the blank).
Cheers,

where is the air duct that goes from the heater blower to the passengers side heat exchanger? the one with the arrow pointing to it just goes to the drivers side, right?

Ok, on second thought...I just looked at a diagram and it looks like that hose is just the inlet hose for the electric motor...in which case, why does it matter if it has a hole in it? its just sucking fresh air right?

The air hose takes pressurized airflow from the engine fan and routes it to the electric motor. The electric motor by itself can only move so many cubic feet of air at a time. By having air rammed into the electric motor, more air will flow to the passenger compartment. You said your heating system wasn't working so well, maybe the broken hose is contributing. It's easy to test. Use electrical tape to tape up the pipe so it's virtually air tight, then run your heater and see if you see any improvement.

If you look under the car you will find it strapped to the muffler and connected to the back end of each heat exchanger with a short section of red hi-temp rubber tubing.

On the front side of each heat exchanger is a section of hi-temp flex tubing that connects to the heater control valves for each side.

The weird part of the system is that when the control valve is open the heat is off. Heated air is always coming out of the heat exchangers so basically it vents the system's pressure out to the atmosphere when open. When the valve is closed the heated air is forced forward through the rocker panels and up under the dash.
