Default Thoughts on '87 3.2 in Sacramento

I'm curious if anyone here is familiar with this individual car:

http://www.luxmotorcars.com/1987-Por...0/Details.aspx

A family member is considering buying it, and seeing as I've spent an unhealthy amount of time reading about and obsessing over these cars, I'm going along to check it out later this week. I know I can't determine much without seeing it in person and driving it, but in case anyone here has knowledge of hidden (or obvious...) issues I thought I'd check. Looks like a nice example from what I can tell. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Lux motors is a pretty good place.
They tend to ask really high prices and cars sit for a while.
They are in my opinion asking top dollar for this car.
It is nice but should be better at close to 50k.
The speakers are ugly, nice exterior color, interior should be in better shape for the price.
Mine has 137k on it and is way way cleaner.....
I think it should be low 40's.

I certainly agree on the speakers (and stereo).

It's certainly a higher price than I'd be inclined to pay...

Get pics of the underside.
Nice color gotta love that blue and light interior tough to keep clean and shows wear but has sport seats which are rare and leather door panels and and rests

Looks clean but worn

Offer low 40s and do a PPI if you love the color.

I have experience with this dealer. As far as dealers go, I would say they were pretty good. Seemed pretty honest and willing to negotiate fairly.

Nice car for low 40's. If it is in the high 40's, that is a high price for a car that needs some work to get it right. I do like the exterior color.

I think the price is a lot higher than the current market value for the car. A PPI might also uncover some work, perhaps major, that is needed which will raise the total cost to foolish levels. If the dealer calks at you getting a PPI done, walk away very briskly!

Thanks all!

I certainly wouldn't buy without a PPI, and it's good to know who to look for in the area.

Going to check it out tomorrow. Hopefully they're willing to negotiate.

Saw that car today when checking out a 74 3.6 conversion they had their as well. It did look good if a bit overpriced which is to be expected I guess.

Flomofo, you may wish to check out the forms at Pelicanparts, they are currently picking apart that 74 3.6 conversion you saw yesterday. Just saying.

Ya, haven't looked at Pelican, but I did notice it to the right of the wide shots of this car and looked at the dealer inventory. How could someone spend that kind of money on a motor and paint only to completely ignore every other aspect of the car? It's a dive.

Had a look at that 3.6 conversion while I was there. Interesting set of choices, probably good fun, but not for me...

The 3.2 is on consignment, and the dealer conceded the price is on the optimistic side, but I guess that's where the market is right now. Plenty of people throw up a price, and eventually someone might come along and pay it. I guess it makes a certain amount of sense, especially if the owner isn't too bothered when he/she gets rid of the car.

I was expecting nicer condition, based on the price, but there were a couple cracks in the dash, and there was some light paint chipping on the front end and one of the doors. What really surprised me is the weather stripping around both doors had fallen apart in multiple locations. The most recent service was around $5,000, and included an R134 conversion, new brakes all around, there were fresh tires, etc. Odd that some not-too-expensive rubber was ignored. And, of course, as you can tell from the pictures, the leather showed its age, and mileage. Though my '83 944 has a ruined side bolster I've put of getting replaced, the leather everywhere else looks far superior to this newer, lower mileage Carrera.

But leather and weather stripping aside, I find it hard to fault the car. It drove beautifully, all the switchgear was functional and felt great...

Why does it have a USA VIN in the listing but the photo of the chassis VIN is a Euro VIN? It doesn't look like a Euro (no side marker lights) and there's no mention of the 231hp engine. It seems like we ran across this before on the forum but I don't recall what the explanation was for two VIN numbers.
