Default While you're in there motor drop

Ok, seen many threads... Making my head spin, on pelican too.

So my engine/trans is getting dropped for a clutch. I've got every part to replace (clutch, tob, shaft, slave, hose, fork, ring gear, flywheel, pilot bearing, bolts on and on... but I hate doing things 2x).

So while the motor is out, we are going to:
Adjust valves
Have the fan refinished
Have alternator rebuilt (get a little bit of whine when all accessories on)
Refinish the tin
Have a look at the chain tensioners (I get just a bit of cold start rattle)
Have a look at all the rubber fuel, oil, vacuum lines
Replace the lower oil hose from the tank
Inspect for any seepage and fix


And well, what ELSE??


Car doesn't leak (well it doesn't drip), leak down was good a year ago, car pulls strong, doesn't use much oil, and I've done plugs, fuel filter, plugs are clean, basically everything you can with the engine in there. I'm not doing a top end job yet. :-)

Car has 89k miles and is all original. 89 carrera

Replace the insulation.

Oil thermostat? Only way to get to it is when it is when motor is out.

This I've done. Did it when I replaced the engine mounts, lowered engine a bit, wasn't bad job, removing old one was harder.

replace all the seals Chris. They are dirt cheap and a breeze engine out work. Intake manifold gaskets etc as well. All fuel lines. Injector ultrasonic clean...

Hmmm,

What you want to replace are the oil leakers in the "triangle of death" as we sometimes call it. This would be your oil thermostat "o" ring, not the thermostat, the temp sending unit, and the oval breather gasket. All located on the top rear of the engine.

You should inspect and/or replace your front and rear main seals as well.

Since you are not doing a top-end, and you have no issue with manifold leaks I would not bother replacing manifold gaskets, More work than its worth and can wait until top end is done. However, do inspect and replace fuel lines as needed.

Yeah on a carrera the triangle of death is no big deal but I would do it while out.
Definitely crank seals and oil cooler seals.
Tin work is a good idea.
I would look at doing reference and crank sensor

Cool thanks guys. I'm trying (hard for me) to not go too crazy :-) engine isn't even out yet and I have $3k in parts sitting here.

When this is done it's going to Tony at Autobahn for a few refreshes.

Then I have more into it then it's worth, which means I cannot sell it.

oh and absolutely the fuel lines if they are original. Fuel lines are a very weak area of the Carrera and especially the small J-line that most people dont replace when replacing fuel lines as it is inaccessible with the engine in the car.

Can you list the part number for the part you refer to?

Well the car has one factory, and given it's been a weekend driver with no track use it seems to work pretty good, at least on canyons the lockup seems good getting out of corners...

Question: For those who have done fuel lines, the factory parts are expensive (as normal!), has anyone had these rebuilt? Using the quality metal connections with new rubber, and get refinished / rebuilt?

930-110-509-01 is the part number for the j-line (sounds like an import tuner part )

I have done both, and always thought Genuine is too expensive. I think there are companies already sell these kits readily available, like Griffiths

Last time I did a local shop charge me $240.00 but had to do the work again (shop's lack of quality).

You got options. And it is all numbers at the end...

Contact Len over on Pelican.. he makes the lines all the time.. sorry I couldn't find the pic/thread that shows the Carrera line.. but he does them.
